Seriously, is there ever any way to get ahead?

Those are NEVER on my grocery list. A snack is a luxury.

What can I say? I have 2 teen age boys and 1 high metabolism husband - snacks wormed their way onto the list until they practically took it over. It was mostly when they took lunches to school and when we started homeschooling they never went away. So, snacks were our downfall.

The snacks my boys were eating were fruit leathers, roll ups, "nutrition" bars, that kind of thing. I save so much money by just making them eat real fruit instead. I don't know how I got trapped into those packaged foods, they just snuck in gradually until it was out of hand.

Debi - that's great that he likes fruit! One thing that I don't cut down on, ever, is good produce. It's just too important to scrimp there.

Making raised beds out of pallets is a fabulous idea! The bag method works, too. You can get bags of dirt really cheap. The only way that it may not be worth it is if you are in an area with water shortages with high water bills. There are ways to make a good waterwise garden, but they take an initial investment.

I also want to mention that a lot of people don't understand how much grocery prices can fluctuate based on your area. When I lived in the Bay Area in CA it was nuts how expensive basic groceries were. So, while it may cost one person $800 a month to feed a family in one part of the country, it may cost $1200 in another. It doesn't mean that the person spending $1200 is buying anything different, just that the same groceries cost 30% more.

Costco is bad news for me. I don't have confidence that I could behave there. There is just too much temptation.

Debi, I thought you were serious, too, just like Harlan and Olive Hill. Sorry.

Well I AM serious. Seriously complaining about how a bank account can be drained like that and not even realize it. I just cashed in cans for $19 - YAY I can have gas!!! Not much at $3.39 a gallon. Ugh.

Well, there is venting with a need for sympathy and stating a problem looking for solutions. Guys tend to want to fix things when you tell them about stuff. Girls tend to want commiseration. I say "tend" because I have a FIX IT mentality even though I am a girl. My gf get mad at me for proposing solutions instead of telling them "poor baby!". I just wish they would tell me before hand so I wont make it worse!!!
