Times are a lot better for us now, but living on the edge sucks. We've been through that a little. At least you know that you have a ton more than most people.

Amen to that one!!! To be completely broke for one week, well, let's just say I am a whiner. It ALWAYS happens the last week of the month when we pay rent. I should be used to it. But I'm not and I am going to implement some of the suggestions here in order to try to not have to experience that anymore.
I really thought in my original post that when I asked for donated cans, everyone would get that this is rant. I apologize if I confused people.

Say waahhhh? Deb, this is very stressful stuff and financing is very important- I doubt anyone sees this as a rant. Pardon me though, I didn't read any of the other replies, as usual.

LOL! It is a rant, because we make enough money to not have this problem. So trying new things to reduce costs is what I needed and what I got, mostly. And yes it is stressful!!!!

This is me, too, and I, too, took this as a thread where you were wanting ideas on things to change to free up money. Since that is my mentality, I'm going to throw one more out at you, just because I saw you comment on it and it's a change we made. You said that your DH loves his TV. So did mine and I had 3 shows I loved to watch every week, too. I cut the cable/TV service about four years ago when we were moving. Intended to turn it back on after were settled but never did. I found out that my three shows could be watched on the computer the next day on the website (CBS, etc.) for no extra fee. DH found out that most of what he watched could, too. So we never turned it back on, saves a lot compared to what we used to pay. Will it be an adjustment at first? Sure, but spend some time noting your favorite shows and see if you can watch them on the websites (CBS, Hulu, Clicker, there are more). If so, there you go, one bill you can get rid of.
Plus, if you are like us, once you don't have the TV on all the time (habit mostly) your electric bill goes down some and you find that those other things you are doing (working on the plants, puzzles, studying, etc.) are enjoyable and you end up not watching all of those shows anymore. Turns out they weren't all that important to begin with for us.
If it wasn't for my autistic son's addiction to toon disney, I would cut the cable too!
I know a guy that worked for comcast in billing. He knew every trick in the book and still couldn't get a descent deal when his promos ran out. What he finally did was cancel the lnd line and go trac phone, canceled cable, and kept only high speed internet. He got a Netflix and Hulu subscription and bought himself a new HD TV that could get the new digital signal without cable. Now his kids get all their shows online, he gets his football shows free, and he estimated he is saving about $100/month.
