Seriously???

I really have to ask why you picked from the straight run bin. It seems to me the odds would be against you picking from there especially if you wanted, or your heart was hoping for pullets only. At least that what it sounds like to me.

I went to two TSCs twice that only had straight runs in stock the days I visited. I decided to pass, then waited a week until the pullet runs came in specifically to increase my odds. I got two cockerels (confirmed) out of 18 chicks purchased from the "assorted pullet", and "production red pullet" bins. I still don't know about one of the buff wyandottes. My only complaint was I got six barred rocks from a bin labled dominiques. They are all pullets, and I'm happy with them. Other than that, I'm glad I waited for the pullets.

Now, that said, I will never buy chicks from TSC again. I've found a much better local feed store with employees I trust much more than the folks at TSC.

I bought 6 day old babies from mypetchicken I - 1st day I lost Noodle the EE. I want 6 dual purpose birds all of different breeds. Luckily the local fed store had baby Arcaunas within a day or two of mine. The fella there didn't have a clue how to sex chicks. I didn't either. Wish me luck, I turned a couple over and did the baby kitten / rabbit look see. The "girls" are 8 weeks old. I am still hoping noodle isn't a roo.

I picked up 6 speckled sussex from TSC this spring and 4 are certainly roos and the jury is still out on the other 2. They aren't as developed as the other 4 but they are more developed than I would expect for a pullet so we'll see. I do think the hatchery pulls out the pullets for all their orders and send what ever is left for the straight run bins. I won't do it again. I haven't had any better luck hatching my own. I am very good at hatching boys, lol

I didn't get them from TSC, but from a local lady. She said that all but one that she gave me were pullets (I wanted the "Black Copper" cockerel). I got 7, all but two were cockerels, and one of the pullets was taken by a hawk. *sigh* My next group were sexlinks, so I know I got pullets. I have four others that I don't know about as they were straight run. Time will tell on those.

I'm just the opposite. Was hoping for at least 1 roo and now I have 9 pullets, no rooster for next year's stock. I did however get very lucky with my ducks, grabbed 2 Khakis from the straight run and ended up with a girl & boy.
Guess I'm going to have to find a swap some where and hope I get the rooster I wanted...silver laced wynadotte.

Because my store ususally only has sex links as pullets, which I didn't want. I figured I'd get roos. Buying 10 I figured 5, maybe 6 would be roos. But 8?

Wow so many of you ended up with boys when they were suppose to be girls. How awful that TSC is either putting one over on their customers or perhaps the hatchery fooled them. Either way, I would never buy chicks from them so thanks for the warning. I purchaed straight run from a breeder and got 4 out of ten roos, not bad! I also hatched 2 eggs with my broody and have 2 boys. I think I am pretty lucky

Think about it, straight run should be about 50/50 with 100 chicks. Now if they get less in, the ratio could be very different. Next multiple people are buying chicks from this bin, again skewing the results. TSC has no control over this. With straight run, you always take a chance of getting a lot of roos. Even the pullet been is risky. With 90% accuracy the rule, a bin of 100 pullets could have 10 or more roos. Again it is just a game of chance, and some win. You can never guarantee 100% pullets.

I have the same luck, picked up 3 mottled bantam cochins from the feed store earlier this year in hopes of having only 1 cockrel in the bunch... They had 4 mottleds left and I took the 3 that looked "girly" to me... 2 of the 3 are boys and one has taken a liking to my hand

My hatch this year resulted in 5 chicks, 3 are girls, so not much better luck on that one either. I hear some folks talk about MPC for sexed pullets but I will tell ya, thats not always the case either, had a friend order from them and she got 2 roos in her "sexed pullets". Sometimes ya just can't win
