If there's one thing I learned this last hatch is to not throw any eggs away that yer not 100% on. I had 2 brahma eggs at lockdown that didn't "look" like the rest of the eggs, I had them on my desk after candling I was going to throw them away. but I wasn't 100% so I candled again and in both to my utter amazment I saw movement and today they are both deez cute little chickies in the brooder.

Good luck

I know it is very early ( we are due on the 27th ) but I candled some eggs. I have 13 that have veins and a definite little embryo in the middle... awesome! Some look like no progress at all, so I have them all arranged in the bator with definite live ones in certain rows... I'll post a pic here in a minute.

Looking good jophoto.

Fairybee: good luck! Looking forward to pics of those goslings

Ok, its day 12 for my duck eggs. Just completed the official candling session:

7/7 of my Pekin duck eggs from my very own Donald and Daisy are not only doing well but are dancing a merry old jig in there!

4/12 Cayuga duck eggs had movement, the others were either suspiciously clear or I thought I could see an embryo but it was still, hmm, like possibly dead

And the 5 chicken eggs that snuck into the bator I couldn't see a thing through the shells

Am really gutted on the cayugas. They were shipped and got delayed and at least one has a detached air cell. Was just kind of hoping for more from them. Well

for the few I saw moving.

And I rehomed our rooster Ebony today, along with a hen called Goldie, for company. The last week or two he's been increasingly aggressive and he pecked my two year old yesterday and he stalks her, and he's almost at face height with her and it was making me nervous, so he's gone to be an alarm clock for someone else

Sooooo...no more fertile chicken eggs in my garden until the chicks grow up and I'm down to 6 hens and 2 ducks from a peak of 15 hens and 6 ducks
sad.png

Plus my 15 chicks of course

And aren't they getting big quickly! I should sell maybe 6 or 7 of them but am a bit attached at the moment and wary of accidentally ending up keeping all roosters

HI, can I join in??? I set 34 eggs on the 7th. they are a mix of RIR BO and white leg horns. This is my second attempt and hoping I do better this time around. First time I only had 1 chick and about 2 hours after it hatched I went to the store and back with-in 20 min. during that time my 3 year old granddaughter wanted to play with it. Well you all know the rest of that story..

Jophoto: you should photograph some pekin duck egg candling - they are incredible compared to the chicken eggs. Like a window. Early on I could see the heart beating through the shell. Incredible.
One of cayuga eggs is totally black but can still see through it better than maran eggs.

Jophoto ~ that is one of the best candling pix I've ever seen. keep taking those good photos maybe urs will end up being references some day.

You guys are all a little ahead of me

I set mine Friday 4/9

How often should I candle? My first time around, I started at day 9 and then maybe once a week after that. Is that too much? I just get so excited. lol
