Set eggs 9/27/10 - anyone care to join?

for veins and wriggles. I'd wait for your next candling before tossing... but if they are clear, clear you could go ahead and toss them if you feel comfortable with that. At first with some of my unsure eggs I waited just to be sure, then after a couple of bator hatches I knew when to toss and if I'm unsure I just leave them in and a good thing too I've had some hatch.

Happy to have somewhere to "report" to as I think my husband, although trying to be a good sport, is totally tired of hearing about it.

Lisser/Melissa or anyone that can help......
When a hatch is staggered will hen continue to set on remaining eggs even though she has new chicks bopping around that need her attention? Is it best to remove new peeps and put into brooder so she can concentrate on remaining eggs? Can they then be returned to her and will they be accepted by her? Thanks so much for everyone's help......Claudia/Ohio......I love my chickens, they are so much fun. I love learning too.

I'm just a day behind! I set a dozen Black Copper Marans eggs on the 28th and and 16 Buff Orp eggs on the 29th. I don't think I'll candle, though, because the BCM eggs are too dark to see through and my last candling experience ended with me thinking an EE egg was a dud when it wasn't! I plan on locking down the bator on the BCM's day 19 (which will be day 18 for the BO). I can't wait for chicks!

Can I join in? I set some BC Marans and olive egger eggs (shipped from Wynette) on 9/24. This is my third time incubating, but first time with a fan in my still air incubator. So I'm at day 7? I can't candle though because shells are too thick, can't see through them.

:woo Yeah! That is awesome that 12/18 shipped are developing! 98 degrees probably helped your incubation get started.

I don't have a lot of experience with incubating but I waited until day 10 before tossing clears, as long as they don't get funky smelling. I always sniff them when I candle.

Yes, I hovered like crazy too! I still do somewhat, but it does lessen as you go on.

I could see how you could get an aversion to eggs - it probably will go away with time.

I don't have experience with broodies other than my neighbor's one broody, but there is a lot of info on BYC about it. I think it depends on how staggered the hatch is. If it's just 2 or 3 days I think she would probably wait - the little chicks will stay under her for warmth at least a day or two. If the hatch is staggered more than that, you might want to either move the babies to a brooder or move the remaining eggs to a hatcher. I have heard of some broodies - especially first timers - making some mistakes so if I were you I would definitely have a brooder ready to move the chicks to.

Good luck!!

Welcome to the thread!!!! I've heard that some high-powered LED flashlights can see through Maran's eggs but you're right, those are tough!

I'm looking forward to chicks too!
