Set eggs April 3rd, who's with me!!??

We've only hatched from eggs once (they hatched 2 weeks ago), so I'm by no means a pro. On day 8, we candled / flashlighted? :) our dozen eggs. A couple looked empty, and a lot looked like it had maybe a dime size darker spot. The spot did move. The reason you spin the egg is so the membrane doesn't seal onto the shell and the chicken can continue to grow, so yes, it should move when you move it. We did it in a dark room, cupped our hands around the egg and slowly spun it on the flashlight, the dark spot could be anywhere in the egg and you may not be able to see it in one position but you can in another. We had 8 hatch from our dozen fertilized eggs that we bought.

hmmmm....might be in trouble here.....i snuck a peek at a few of my eggs last night.......when you gently roll the egg, it is not supposed to roll within the egg? All I am seeing is a darker mass that is about 2/3 of the content that spins within the egg when I turn it........not good right?

Good to hear Loveshack!

How are your hatchlings doing? What breed are they?
Yes, we candled last night and everything is looking good!

We will candle again next weekend, what should I be seeing at day 14 or so?

They are doing great! We handle them a lot and they are very friendly and growing well. We had one that was sick the day after they hatched and we thought we were going to lose her, we put her into a separate brooder and fed her sugar water through a dropper for 24 hours. She perked back up and is doing great now! We have 4 barred rocks, 2 rhode island reds, and 2 ameracaunas.

The dark spots will get bigger until you can't see through the egg anymore.

How did your candling go?

I candled last night, and of the 6 Polish eggs I set on the 2nd, all were totally clear. No development whatsoever.

But on a good note, the 22 eggs I set on the 3rd were ALL developing, and had tiny kickin' chickens inside!! I've never had 100% development on a shipment of eggs before. This guy did a great job of packing. There are 16 Blue Ameracaunas, 2 Bantam Ameracaunas, 2 Heritage Reds, and 2 Buckeyes! So excited.

7 of the 15 Silkies look like they were doing good, and 23 of the 24 Buff Brahma are doing good. I'm on day 7..... so here's to hoping!

My broody silkie's sitting on eggs I gave her the day after I popped the Marans in the incubator so they should be hatching right around the same time. I can't wait!

Wow that's awesome for shipped eggs. I've read so many threads about having bad hatch rates from shipped eggs, I'm kinda nervous but I've told myself that as long as about half of them hatch I'll be good. The ones I'm incubating were shipped from Ohio to Texas
