SET EGGS JUNE 23 ANYONE WITH ME?

ChickSter.... you are probably ahead of your fellow students anyway on hatching eggs ..HAHA Knowing how is only part of doing isnt it?

After rereading some posts by ppl who have hatched out a lot of chicks,,.am setting my humidity at 75 if i can get it there.

Someone earlier had theirs at 80 and i said it was a little too high..Im corrected...... totally !!!
Somebody shut my mouth ......75-80 correct!
Fighting getting it up now but just added a lot of water thru straws(took awhile HAHA). Might need to go to the farm store and buy a piece of thin plastic hoseThat way i can put the water where I want exactly. I Have rags in i want to wet.
Well maybe not its at 76 now. thats ok ithink. Not lower.

Still so worried about my low cut egg carton, only about 1/2 inch or so at the bottom holding them (see?).I put the rags around in case they tip .I cant see how they could help from tipping once they get wiggling. Not really well balanced and stable with only 3 eggs. HOw dumb of me. Would you open and put taller sided one in before pipping? I have one.
I just have these 3 good eggs.Rag is on the side with the flash too. Both sides

Well ijust read the last posts that arent mine and see some one has a hatch with the humidity at 73 so ...makes me feel better.

OMgosh! Such good luck with the first 3 early hatchers... went out that morning and there are 3 lil chicks... then yesterday finding a lil guy half hatched and dead. Now... This morning we noticed one of the 2 eggs left had piped. Just a little bit ago we go out and momma is off the next w/ the 3 chicks and the egg is zipping. Momma get back on the nest and steps on the egg, it cracked all over, lots of peeking. I thought it was a fluke and not 5 minutes later she did it again!!!
I don't think it looks good for that lil guy. I am heating up my brooder box and going to try to put the other two in there with some sponges. Momma just keeps getting up all the time now that the other ones hatched and I'm afraid she's going to trample these two.

Sounds like you maybe should remove them .Dont want another disaster!

Luckily, hatching isn't part of getting my degree. lol. Humidity, temp. that is different that is where my degree comes in (clouds, rain, atmosphere). lol.

I wish I had cut my cartons down that low. I didn't cut them that low and my chick is stumbling from cup to cup. Poor baby.

Mine was at 80 yesterday, but it's dropped since then. Depending on what and where you read about it, everyone has a different idea of where humidity should be during lock down. The incubating for dummies book I bought says 75-80 for a better hatch rate, but the instructions that came with the incubator says 60-70...who knows, I mean, the variance can't be that huge of a deal; mommy chickens don't exactly keep a hydrometer in their nests with them, right?

I'm still between 68-70 right now. I'm hoping it holds there for the next few days...wouldn't you know the past 2 weeks have been awful, humid, damp mucky day and all of a sudden (when I need the mugginess) we get a striking reprieve from it all!

For the first, and only time in my life in saying "bring back the humidity!!" lol

Ok. What now? I have 4 hatched, dry & in the brooder all snuggled together sleeping. Are they going to sleep a lot during this phase or will they start getting more active?

Still nothing here. Husband egg watched for me today while I was out of town working. He did a good job. Guess tomorrow while I am out of town I can get my 16 year old son to egg watch but I bet that won't go over real well. He kinda stays up all night and sleeps all day right now, attached to his Xbox.

Sounds like everyone is getting antsy! LOL!
So funny. A year ago, I would've laugh if someone told me I would be so into chickens...and now I'm addicted.
Anyways - Update. I had brought the egg that was stepped on (twice!) and the last egg inside. Put them in the brooder w/ heat and extra sponges and wet rags and thermometer, but I don't have anything to measure humidity. Had to help the lil guy get out of the egg... could tell he was working at it everytime I went in to check. I think the membranes were drying out due to all the cracks and the top of the egg gone, after waiting several hours to make sure he had absorded everything I peeled off more of the shell and the outer membrane. And helped a little after that as he got out. He dried off and seems to be doing fine. I think I'm going to call him "Lucky Butt" --- (kinda like fluffy butt)
Just a lil bit ago I took him and the last egg back out and snuck them back under broody momma. -- I don't think the brooder is quite warm enough for the egg, it didn't really feel warm to the touch like they did when I would take them out from under broody to candle. Figure she can at least keep it warm overnight and if she doesn't want to stay on the nest tomorrow I can bring it back in and turn the brooder (make shift incubator) back on.

Good luck everyone... post pics of your babies!!!
