ok i candled. only 2 were clear so really pleased. some were wriggling away which is so cool to see. 5 marrans, 9 bo, and 10 pekin. i am hatching for a friend this time but still excting.
i'm off to collect 2 rescue hens today to add to my flock.
at the moment i have 6 grown up girls - 2 pekin, 1 black orpington, 1 choc orpington bantam, 1 lemon pyle brahma and gold laced wayandote and a choc orpington bantam roo, who is so sweet. I also have 10, 2 week old chicks - orpingtons bantam and LF and pekins, yet to find out colours and sex but looks like i have some cuckoo and blue in the mix.
I can't even imagine what 200 birds look like lobos. you must have much more space than me. Think the neighbours (and family) would go nuts if i had that many.
I have a few of the more common chickens: RIR, SLW, EE, blk sexlinks and BO and FBCM. I'm sure I missed a few! Tukeys are in the incubator with EE and unkowns.
It's a real mess. all of my pens are full so there are about 120 left out side my shop with a lot of shade and a covered kennel to keep dry. i hope to be able to build more pens next week but my time is limited. i still have to finish the breeding pens that i started last week.
Lobo--I feel for you. Since chicken math hit, I have had to house a batch in the house; outside in a dog run daytime and back in a brooder at 8 ish. A pain! I'm always behind in coops. Finally decided to put the 7 week marans in with the next oldest pullets as they co-mingle during free range anyway. No fuss when putting them all in together at dusk; everyone is in sleep mode. But I did get up at 5 to let out the older girls before they became irritated with the little girls. SO I get it Lobo, always more to build.
I candled the turkey and chicken eggs tonight. Son lost the flashlight I was using--it is his afterall and what 7 year remembers where he leaves things! Had to substitute a less bright light. CHicken eggs are developing and the turkey eggs are looking like blobs and little light thru. One egg didn't show an air cell at all. Definitely need to get the RH down--too air cells not big enough overall in the 8 checked.
Have let the LG go dry because of the high humidity and today the RH has fallen from 60 to 48. Yeah!!!
DH wasn't too happy when I told him I was saving more turkey eggs because I thought these probably wouldn't hatch. Will know in 2 weeks.
Just candled and have tossed out about a dozen at this point, about half from two cartons and only two from the third. I blaim my idiocy at trying to incubate eggs of various laying points, some of these being over three weeks old when they were stuck in the bator. I have not candled the broody hen's eggs yet.
Oh and just had a PRODUCTION RED go broody a few days ago..
She is is a MEAN thing!!!I think she might make a good momma though!
sorry i'm no good at taking pictures of candling but i did candle today before lockdown. so far things are looking good.
I started with 26, threw 2 clears at 7 days, and todays candling showed 5 iffy ones which i marked with a ? and left in (just in case - but i did give them a good sniff first to make sure they weren't stink bombs in the making) but that leaves me with 19 which look good to go.
chickenjoefan, I haven't dared throw any out. Some of my eggs lookgood and match some of the pictures I've seen, but many others I'm not sure about because they don't match any pics. If in doubt, I'll keep. nothing stinks yet.
I see you have lt sussex! My boys LOVE the one hen we have. She is very sweet, and pretty! Only a few here in the US. Speckled sussex easily available. Love those too. THe girls help with the gardening!
Was trying this method this time. Can't wait to see how my hatch does. I just had another hen go broody outside too.. Probably will order a dozen silkie eggs and put them with the hens. lol
