I would like to know what you all are using for a candler. I am unsure of how bright a light I need. I know that 75w bulb isn't even close to being bright enough for the job.

Like I posted earlier, I am going to buy some 9 LED flashlights powered by 2AA batteries and see if they do the trick. Any other inexpensive suggestions would be welcome.

I also use a mini mag light & have no trouble seeing through dark maran eggs. I've tried an LED light and the mini maglight outshines it anyday.

Ok I was late to candle but here is what I had...

11 out of 14 delaware
2 of 2 of my BCM
10 out of 12 Blue Wheaten Amerucanas
7 out of 14 golden laced cochin

My two weeping eggs were golden laced cochin and 5 had blood rings. None of my other eggs have been rotten or blood rings others just werent fertile. These eggs were the cleanest eggs I had ever recieved if the breeder maybe washed the eggs and removed the coating on the egg could that be why all their eggs are going bad?

Thanks for the suggestions. I have a mini mag lite at home and I have a 3 LED flashlight that seems pretty bright. I will try them both tonight. If they don't do it I will buy a 250W reader bulb for my homemade candler which is just like ThreeBoysChicks.

I am still having issues with my thermometers. I now have two digital therm/humidity gauges in there along with the original mercury therm that came with the egg turner. The humidity readings match exactly. But all 3 have readings that vary by at least 1-2°. Before I incubate again, I will find a reliable thermometer.

I found that the 2 thermometers that came with my bator are more accurate than the digital w/ hygrometer thermometer that I bought separately.

Report your candling findings tonight! I'm anxious to see how you're doing. I used a hovabator my last hatch and the temps were all over the place and I still ended up pretty good. I bet u will be fine!

I use a mini mag light for candling. If you build one you might consider using a flourescent bulb to cut down on heat generated--you don't want to cook that egg while you are trying to decide if it is viable.
