Settin chicken eggs tonight! 8-4-11

well 17 of my 24 seem to still be on track.. This is my first hatch, and I am so excited! They are on day 15, how much of their egg should they be taking up? they still seem to be small enough to do chickie acrobatics in there. Is that about right for 15 days? or are they developing a little slow? My BO and EE babies seem to be between the size of a US quarter and half dollar. The banties are about the size of a quarter or just a tad smaller.

This is my first hatch so I'm just learning. Mine are at about that day too and they're taking up pretty much the whole entire thing except for a teeny itsy bitsy bit and the very bottom where the light is. I'm not sure if that's right or not though.

OK tomorrow will be lockdown for me. I know KDailey has their lockdown tomorrow too. Anyone else?

I am going to candle tomorrow night before I lockdown..

ALSO I found I ginornous egg. My first though was that one of my ducks finaly started laying. But then I recalled seeing that rouen/mallard eggs were a greenish color.. So one of my BO laid a huge egg, twice the size of the bigger ones they have been laying. How would a super big egg do if incubated? I know they say small eggs= small chicks.. what about huge eggs? are their any health risks to chick hatched from oversized eggs?

Awesome!

Yes I'm lockin em up tomorrow when I get home from outta town. I'm just praying that nothing was wrong with my incubator that I didn't know about that would cause a super early hatch and I get home to chicks hatching in the auto turner.

One of my neighbor's incubators hatched 3 days early this week! She several incubators that she hatches out of that are spaced so she always has chicks hatching. So because of this she hadn't moved them out of the turner yet (it was supposed to be first day of lockdown) and she wound up having two incubators hatching at the same time! I'll have plenty of chicks to pick from when I get home! lol. She's like my own private dealer. hehe

If y'all remember, I was worried about my incubator being a little too hot at the begining so an early hatch could be a real possiblity. I'm not complaining as long as I'm home first and get them outta the turners.

As far as the extra large egg goes, I have no idea. My opinion? What's it gonna hurt to try and incubate it? I'd go for it and see what happens. Then you'll know for next time. Some might see this as setting the egg up for failure but to me, that's how we learn. It's not evil and it's not mean. It's science! hahahaha

I noticed one egg wobbling around yesterday and another this morning while I was eating breakfast. I can't hardly keep my eyes off of the incubator because this is my first hatch and I'm super excited to watch the chicks as they hatch from the shells! It's also exciting because I built the incubator and I've had to tweak a lot of things along the way! It has really been a learning experience, but that's good! I've already came up with a lot of improvements for the next time around! I'm getting the itch, so to speak because I have already caught myself looking around for my next batch of eggs!
I do have a question though, what do you do with all the chicks? I have lots of space, but with an incubator hatching every 21 days, the yard would fill up pretty quick! I was just curious what other people do with all those chicks and how late in the year can you hatch out eggs since summer is almost over?

My neighbor has a lot of people that buy from her. She started off with advertising on craigslist and our local paper that's just classifieds. She told me the other day that she's afraid to advertise yet until she gets what chicks she wants to replinish her flock because as soon as she advertises she'll have phone call after phone call. lol.

A lot of the people in my area just want the chickens for eggs or they don't have the "obsession" as we all have so they don't incubate, they'd just rather buy them from someone else, or they just don't have the money to incubate. So that's what my neighbor does. I bought her out the other day. lol. I pretty much take what cash i have on me and ask her, "How many can I get for this?" She usually cuts me a deal so instead of saying $3 a chick she'll just tell me "You can have.....15 or so for $40. Wound up coming to like $2 and some change for each chick.
