Setting 8/12 any buddies

Houston - we've got a problem (maybe)

9 of my 12 eggs have hatched

The chicks are still in the incubator and dry. I have one chick still in the shell, that has been struggling for about 7 hours to get out. All I can see is his foot - no beak. The other chicks have been pecking at his foot, and it's still moving, barely. The other 3 eggs have tiny pips, going on 6 hours. The incubator is starting to have an icky odor.

Fellow hatchers - should I remove the dry chicks to the brooder? It has been about 28 hours since the first one hatched, they are all doing really well, but stumbling all over the other eggs.

Should I try to help the one with his foot sticking out?

I don't know what to do!!!

I would wait for the other two to hatch. If you open the incubator you risk shrink wrapping the remaining chicks. I have had this happen with an upsidedown chick 2 times and I let them go for 24 hrs (first to pip and didn't want to help and risk ruining my hatch) and they both made it out on their own, but it sounds like yours will probably need help once the other chicks have hatched. Chicks can take up to 12 hours from pip to zip and be fine.

The humidity in my Hovabator somehow dropped to 60%. It had been holding steady at 70% while the first 9 chicks hatched, I don't know what happened

Usually the humidity increases, not decreases. I didn't even think to look

at the hygrometer.
I did open the incubator just a little bit and shot in 2 oz. of warm water into the reservoir. The humidity is back up to 70%. The chick foot is still moving, and the other chicks just won't leave her

alone!

I've been researching the threads about helping chicks out vs not helping hatch. I've decided not to help chip away at any eggs. I've been blessed with 9 so far, and hopefully there will be more, but I really don't want to mess with them only to have them die a week later. That doesn't help the chick out, it only prolongs death IMHO. I've done the best I could, and that will have to suffice

Good choice, and I commend you for researching before making your decision

You have had a great hatch
woot.gif
I noticed that after a lot of the chicks hatch the humidity drops. I have no idea why
idunno.gif
I will have to research that

I have two chicks

out and 2 pips. The one shipped egg has done nothing so far, but was rocking and chirping earlier in the day so I will hope it hatches overnight.

OMG so today is day 22 and there are seven eggs left in the Bator all 19 chicks that hatched are in the little brooder and I was going to throw the other 7 away today because there were no signs of life so i thought. but forgot all about them been too busy looking for the runaway dog. (we found him) so im in my room and i hear this really loud chirp i thought it was the baby’s in the brooder but there all quite and sleeping so i look in the Bator and there is a little peep hole in one of the remaining 7 eggs thank goodness a didn’t throw them out today

Hi
smile.png

The little one with the yolk sak seemed fine this morning! She was sitting up and walking around chirping loudly to the other babies in the brooder box so I looked and her sak seemed absorbed so she was put into the brooder box. She snuggled down and after much chirping by all they all went back to sleep
smile.png
. I realize she can probably still have problems like infection etc. but she seems strong and rearing to go

. Thanks for holding my virtual hand and for all of the Awesome advice and Knowledge you all make available !

OK We did not loss power but just some little blinks but soooo much rain. My eggs are starting to do something this morning will keep posted. I set them late on the 13. I am going out to ck everone else before it starts aining again.

Congrats to everyone.

I'm having a blast playing with the babies, and my dogs are pretty cool with them too.

So I think it's time to start a 8/12 raising babies thread, would be neat to see everyones chicks as they grow up.

I just had my first run in with pasty butt, wasn't bad, don't think it was blocked, but rather get it early than later.
