Setting and hatching in December? Come join us! - Holiday Season hatch-along

Well my plans to start a batch of eggs today got shifted to tomorrow so I will have Christmas chicks. Can't wait to get them here and in the incubator!!

So I just got my eggs(21) YAY! But I noticed a few of them are slightly soiled with just a few streaks. Are those eggs going to be ok? Should I clean them, wipe them, rinse them, or disinfect them before I set them in the morn?
No dont clean them! The hen puts a antibacterial coating on them as thye lay and washing cleans it of.they are pourish and if cleaned gemrs a nget in!Real dirty wpont hurt had some poopy ones that hatched a couple weeks ago.Someone tiolsd me their best hatch was really dirty poopy eggs!.

They look Americauna/easter eggers to me.. Idk though, still learning. IS that nail polish on the eggs?
Yes that is. LOL those two were cracked. One of them has become dog food. The other still doing great. Strange enough the one that became dog food wasn't cracked as bad. But once in the incubator it started to get goo coming out of the shell (not near the cracks though) so i removed it.

OMGoodness!! What a cutie the chick is.. I have yet so come across one with no eyes, missing limbs, added lims, ect. I know i will one day though. I did come across a chick with spraddler leg, with a tendon issue, plus it's bone sticking out of it's foot, but none of the others. Hope this one can get enough strength to live.
I've had a chick hatch in the past with one eye, and on hatch with the beak messed up. the top part was normal but bottom went to the side. Both grew into good laying hens. :) I think my mom still has Pirate. But Chicky (the messed up beak) dissapeared after my dog was PTS. She didn't get along with the other hens so she slept in the dog house there. That was years ago. I think without the dog to protect her something got her.
Deformities happen when occasionally people hatch out chicks and decide to keep the rooster several years in a row...

EWWW lol and i thought so. I was telling my mom about the whole nail polish trick, but wasn't positive so thought I'd ask. Does it really work?

The lay down -set up question
.I am so divided. what to do this time.

First 2 ever hatches in a turner Not one hatched.
Eggs down next 5 or 6 hatches...chicks hatched.
Last hatch kept 7 in a carton and 4 down ...hand turned
2 down hatched ,one zipped 1/2 way and died .
2 up hatched
.Started all up for 24 hours then laid 4 down
I do have a turrner too but like to hand turn.
I still dont have a good answer whats best.

Yeah it does. My last try at hatching there was an egg that had a crack. It made it all the way into lock down and didn't die til after i pulled it from the shell and saw it was deformed and i culled it. I don't suggest pulling a chick from it's shell but it was a week past due.

You put nail polish on and let it dry before putting it in the incubator. :)
