Setting and hatching in December? Come join us! - Holiday Season hatch-along

I am setting my very first batch tomorrow. YEY! Wondering how everyone places their eggs...I am hand turning. Should I put them in an egg carton and flip them end to end or lay them flat on the floor and mark sides...is there a preferred way?

Both ways work. I'm currently using cartons on my turning racks and they work fine. For the cartons i cut the top off and set the bottom in the top. It limits the flexing. For hand turning cartons will certainly make the time you have to have the incubator open minimal. Welcome to the hatch :)

Im going to join you guys! I just got my first incubator a few days ago and will be picking up a dozen EE eggs on sunday. Im not sure what date I will set them though because of a busy christmas scheduale. Ill either set on dec 3rd or 4th for a Christmas eve or Christmas day hatch. This will be my very first time incubating and hatching chicks Im so excited. Im glad I found another group of people to do it with.

Set mine on Monday 11/23.. Hoping I can hatch something with my crap a still air a bator.. ;)

you know i had a still air LG and it was sooo easy to to add the fan. I just bought a 80mm
fan from best buy for about $6 (they are cheaper online but i needed it right away), I got four
10x24 2.5inch machine screws with washers and an old cell phone charger. total cost
about $7.50. just splice the charger wires to the fan, there is only one way it will make
the fan go but it won't break if you try the wrong way round first so that's also easy. Then
I drilled a hole in each corner of the fan put the screws through the styrofoam top with the
air flow pointing up and then added the bolts to the tip of the screws just leaving 1/2 inch
gap between the fan and the styrofoam. this is exactly what the lg fan looks like when
installed. I was amazed how easy it was for a ding bat like me..... it holds temp
pretty well now.. not perfect but much better.

on day 4 of my hatch now.... had to take the day off work the insurance inspector won't
certify my roof unless i replace a few shingles that snapped off...... unbelievable what we
have to go through for insurance. Hope I don't fall off the roof...

We have set in November -
16 mixed OE, EE, AM and BO on 11/6 - Started hatching two days early and only 8 hatched.
37 mixed OE, EE, AM and BO on 11/15
14 mixed OE, EE, AM, BO and BR 11/18
16 mixed OE, EE and BR on 11/24
I'm out of room right now but am going to try and make room for a set on the 4th for a Christmas hatch. I was looking for some Silkie eggs to hatch for Christmas but I will probably just hatch what the girls give me. I guess the next set would be the 11th for a New Years hatch.
Thanks for extending the thread to December. This way its easier to keep up with all of the hatches. Heck, just call it the Hatch-along thread Indefinite version and just keep it going.

GOOD LUCK EVERYONE!!!
