Setting Eggs 4/17! Who's With Me?

I set my eggs on 4/17 and 4/21 for a unplanned staggered hatch. My neighbor who is supplying my eggs brought 5 the first time and 8 3 days later so I set those also. I have a second Hova Bator for lock down as to not disturb the ones not ready. This will be my first ever attempt at hatching so wish me luck. Hopefully the humidity spike from last nights and today's storms did not drown my eggs. I am trying to wait until 4/28 to candle but the curiosity is getting to me and may candle the first 5 today.

OOH! Congrats.. can I ask what you used to candle them?

some little flashlight from cvs or target or somewhere. lol... somewhere... it's a LED flashlight but its really small.. i'm starting to have a hard time looking in them since everything has darkened so much i think i need a stronger one. i'm on day 8 now. seems like everyone is still alive haha.

should i take out the eggs that i see are not forming? or should i wait them out?

one egg has no yolk and a bubble :\\

I'm not holding out a whole lotta hope on this hatch. The bator has been jumping from it's usual 102.0 to 98.4 to 103.8 .. but the only egg I've tossed had a very clear blood ring in it. I have two that I think are completely clear.. the others have various stages of veining, but I'm not sure on live babies.. Could see several move clearly at 5 days.. now, not so much ..

I'll rock on, though and try to steady the incubator before I open it and candle anymore ..

I opened up the 10 that looked clear and there were only a couple that you could tell that maybe somethng started....just a bigger white cell. I cooked them all up and gave them to the chickens...they loved em

I came home to7 babies chirping at me more are due i am not opening the bator at all. I have another bator that will be due in a few weeks. They all have veines but 2 were iffy so i will re check them tonight. Good luck all tc

Well, since I have put eggs in the incubator....I go to the coop tonight and have 3 broody hens. ack!! Alice the BO. she is a great mama hen. and 2 new ones, and olive egger and a hatchery stock cuckoo marans. she is 2 and did not go broody last year. I hope she is a good mom. I am sure Alice would take them all anyway. Now to decide what to do with them.. let them stay broody or try to break one or two of them. lol

Good question.. Of course my advice isn't worth a whole lot. I used a lamp to candle mine. I candled and had to get rid of 17 of my 32.. boo hoo.. I'm seriously concerned about my hatch rate this first go round.

For those of you who are more experienced with hatching out eggs what was your success rate the first three times?

Thanks!

I'm right there with you on this. I'm still working out the tweaks on my new Hovabator, fluctuating temps are just one of the frustrations.

I'm just hoping for 50/50 right now on my hatch. My silkie cochins look like they are just not doing well.. really low fertility in them.

Let me know how it goes... I'll be sending good fertility vibes!
