Setting eggs, anyone want to join me? Hatch-Along

Ok so curious question. If a chick hasn't pipped internally and you think its a dead egg and you open a peep hole about the size of a nickel could it harm the chick if its still alive? I've been pondering on doing so is the reason I've asked. Also my eggs are rocking but weaker than they were a day ago, are they dying or something else? I'm so aggravated with this hatch. I have no movement out of eggs that are due today and tomorrow and eggs that were due yesterday. UGH. I guess I'm just impatient. :/

You can only make a pip if it has pipped internally. You CANNOT pierce the inner membrane. That could result in hemorrhage or hatching before it's ready.

"
**IF** YOU DO NOT HAVE AN INTERNAL PIP AND YOU CAN’T HEAR CHIRPING and but you do
SEE MOVEMENT
, place that egg BACK in the incubator and WAIT, this EGG DOES NOT need assisting at this point!
**IF** however YOU DO NOT HAVE AN INTERNAL PIP AND YOU CAN’T HEAR CHIRPING and YOU DO NOT see MOVEMENT please proceed to
The Float Test ~ Checking Egg Viability.
Give Eggs A Full 24 Hrs Overdue Before Float Testing ONLY AFTER CANDLING and NO Internal pips and NO internal MOVEMENT or CHIRPING! This procedure takes very little equipment Or time to do and Is Easy To Perform. If your egg is still viable, place back in the bator and wait!
"

Ok, so if I make a peep hole but don't rupture the membrane could that do damage? And how can you tell if an egg is viable from doing the float test? Does the egg float if its good or sink?

Making a pip hole without an internal pip is pointless because the baby isn't breathing yet and you could potentially dry out the membrane. You want to wait until they pip internally but you need to wait and see if they're going to do it themselves.

Here's the float test:

Start With A Bowl Of Sufficient Depth To Allow The Eggs Your Testing To Float Freely Or Sink. Add 100 Degree Water To The Needed Level And Allow It To Settle( Quit Swirling And Calm Down)

Once Settled Take The Egg Or Eggs To Be Tested And Gently Lower Them Into The Water With As Little Disturbance As Possible. You May Need To Wait A Few Minutes For The Water To Settle Again After Adding Egg/ Eggs. Then Just Watch....

Eggs Are Judged By Observation With Results As Follows:

1. Sinker= Dud, Never Developed

2. High Floater (like A Fishing Bobber Without Weights) Say 45% Or More Of The Egg Above The Water Line= Dud, No Development Or Fetal Demise, Likely Rupture Of Internal Membranes Causing The Egg To Dehydrate.

3. Low Floater= Viable Egg, Development Full Term

4. Low Floater Rockin And Rollin! This Is The Live Embryo Moving Inside The Egg= Definate Viable Egg!

Once Test Results Complete Take Viable Eggs And Gently Pat Dry And Replace In Hatcher. Duds Are Best Discarded At This Time.

It Should Be Noted All Eggs Warrant Close Inspection Prior To Float Testing--- Any Pips In The Shell? Do Not Float Test! If The Shell Is Broken, Pipped Or Cracked In Any Way Water May Enter And Drown The Chick Inside

This Test Works Off Of Air Cell Development With Embryo Growth. Infertile Eggs Will Have An Underdeveloped Or Absent Air Cell That Isnt Large Enough To Float The Egg....thus The Sinkers. Ruptured Membranes Will Allow The Egg To Dehydrate.... Thus The High Floater. Proper Development Of The Embryo Will Cause The Air Cell To Develope To The Point Where Viable Eggs Will Float With Approximately 10-15% Of The Egg Above The Water Line--- These Are The Viable Eggs. Obvious Movement Of The Egg Shows Signs Of Life For The Chick Within. Works On All Bird Eggs From Hummingbirds To Ostriches

Ok so the 2 questionable eggs are viable. Both floated with 10% of the round end floating and both kicked around after the egg settled in the water, so Ima give them a little while longer. Everyone cross your fingers!!!!!!!!
