Setting eggs Aug 18, come join us

I set 19 EE eggs this morning. They are from my neighbors hens. Some are older eggs so hopefully they will develop. They are all huge jumbo size blue eggs. The Roo is a huge two feet plus tall!!! They only want 4 more hens out of the batch so should have a few for myself.

I have a tropical storm heading my way in Thursday. I im panicking I loose the power and i have eggs developing in the bator. If I lost the power I should run the electric generator maybe for the days I am out...Those eggs are REALLY EXPENSIVE!!!! I dont want to be a bad neighbor but I dont want to loose the eggs either. My neighbors are going to kill me!!! Thank god I'm not so near....I have also to secure a few things in the coop..

I'm right there with you. We have a massive generator and I WILL be running it to keep my eggs warm. Unless there is some alternative method of incubation.

I set 13 Chantecler eggs in the incubator on Sunday night the 19th. This is only my second try. 4 weeks ago, we put in 2 eggs, the first one died around the second week and I think the second may have drowned because it was still alive on day 19. So after some sound advice from a friend I've decided to try the dry hatch method this time around. I also think we are going to add the eggs the will be laid this week, but if i do that, I'll need another incubator for the lock down period, we'll see about that. Good luck to you all with you eggs, and especially those of you with a storm coming!!!!!

I found for 58 dollars a small inverter that I can connect to a car battery or to lighter outlet in the car to run the incubator. Is silent so I don't bother neighbors ..during the day i'll have the generator and during the night the inverter. And if one of them fails I can always use the second method to run the incubator...

So how is everyone doing after the first week? for me today is day 7, we candled all 13 and found only one thats not developping. We set another 6 tonight. lets hear how you all are making out.

Well i candled 2 days ago and out of the 15 shpped eggs 5 are developing and 4 I think are quitters. The rest nothing. My control group (eggs from my hens) are developing ok all of them. The double yolker develops one of the of the yolks only.

that has got to suck to get only 5 good eggs out of 15 when you buy them, I can imagine I would have been frustrated tonight if I only had 5 and they are my own, I didn't have to pay for them. before I venture and buy fertile eggs I still have to master the art of incubation. I f I have a good success rate with this hatch, I might buy some silkie eggs from Justine, if she'll sell me some ;)

I have not purchased mail order eggs, for just that reason, plus half will be roos, so that can make a few hens very expensive.

Planning on candling mine on Tuesday night:)!

Here I dont have much options. In Puerto Rico you dont find a lot of the breeds you have there. Here you find fighting breeds and I have no interest in them. The worst is when none hatch. Last incubation I had 52 shipped eggs and none hatched. The only that hatched were my control group. With these eggs If I get a few I'll feel luck. They a really good quality. But is kind of stressing to invest in something that is a total gamble. But if this ameraucana eggs hatch I'll be dancing a whole month. They will be in a broother almost to adulthood...LOL...well maybe not that long. But I'll be over protective.

Well we candled last Friday and looks like we have a lot of bad eggs. We are going to candle the A's tonight and toss the bad ones. We will do the rest in the days to come since we gave each dozen a letter/number to keep track for my sons class project. This is not going to be a good hatch at all for out of 60 eggs I counted 13 that were growing, and a few that I just could not tell at that time. I do not toss eggs till day 10 or after most of the time but the incubator is just to full so going to start to night with the A's and go to the B, C. D. and E's, each day this week.
