1 about 18 ot so
13 welsummer shipped
5 hatched on day 21
2 clear
3 fully develop no pip
2 looked like the copper about 18 days
Homemade cooler bator
temps very stable, but did have coulple of cool nights. maybe 97.7 or so at least for a bit. I would reset my high low every night and every day.,I then put blanket over it at night.
I tried to maintain 35 or so humidity for first 18 then 75 for hatch. The 75 was easy. but temps did drop about 1.5 degree for few hrs when I upped the humidity.
The lower humidity was a bit harder to maintain. Over I am happy with the first attemp at hatching, shipped eggs in January. Oviously the coppers had issues, either did not ship well, or the guy has fertility problems.
The welsummers were very good eggs, but did have some cracked in the shipment, but still had good development. What can I do to improve the hatch rate on the late quitters?
Thsi is a forced air bator, and my temps was stable at about 100. I probably was just a bit hot. When I would check, it was more apt to be 100 than 99.5 on my water wiggler. Maybe even 100.2. The high low would be 98 to 101.5 on my air therm, and I had 3 temps in and 2 hydros, and when all were in the bator before chicks they all were exactky the same. The temp variation from corner to corner and top to bottom was nothing. I played with this bator for 2 weeks before setting, and was happy with no cold spots. I have 6 pencil sized holes about 2.5 inches from the bottom, and 4 slighty bigger ones about 2 inches from the top. they were all open all the time, but the temps were very stable. I placed a glass window pane in the top of the bator for veiwing, had a tube into my water pan for adding water, and turned eggs by placing a 2x4 under ends of the bator. I did candle at 5 and 14 and lockdown, but that was the only time the lid was open. I did have to open to hepl a chick in lockdwon. It was that last one and he was giving up, and was kinda stuck in his shell,m even though my humidity was about 80% at the time, He had been ppped and zipped for 6 hrs. I did hatch in cartons, don't know if I liked that or not. What should I do differntley for next hatch? I will probably set on Friday again.

Do chicks have an umbilical chord? If so, does it sometimes stay attached for a while? My chick has a small little "fleshy lump" near it's vent. Does t his need to come off? Should I moisten it? I would think that it would hinder it from making a bowel movement.

dont moisten it-let it dry off on its own..It was from being attached in the egg sometimes it takes a little bit to come off-like a babies umbilical cord. If it doesnt come off-meaning from the shell then I snip it off. I mean only IF it is still attached the the egg and they need to come out of bator or you notice it id pulling really hard while it tries to walk around bator.

Thanks for the advice.

It's in the brooder keeping the other chick company at the moment. The chord is just a small bump about 1/8" x 1/8". I was a little worried because one of the previous posters said they had one hatch with a growth on it's bottom, and it died.

Hi Everybody, my babies hatched out on the 4th and the 5th, I had just started back to working on the first from being off for seven months anyway just before I left for work I had one hatch and one pip, when I got home in the morninging i had 17 hatched and about 8 more pips, so I sat up and waited for some to hatch, Nothing happening so I went to bed around 2 pm, and got up around 5pm and lo and behold all but two of the eggs hatched except two, one didn't make it out of the shell before she passed and the other one didn't even pip. This is what I got
Hens White leghorn Blossom my one and only. 5 eggs from her some turned out feather legged all are little yellow chicks with black specks and some have feathered legs. so honeycomb is their Daddy(Light Brahma)

3 Blue Cochin hens
13 EEs
Barnevelder just one
Sexlinks Golden and Black
Orpingtons, 4 3 black and one splash
Barred cochin hen and one red
Cuckoo Maran
and one Black Australorpe.

Roosters are
Light brahma
Cuckoo Maran
Barred Rock
Several BBS Orpington
and Salmon Faverole

Im going to have a great time trying to discover who belongs to who! Pretty sure that Oliver the Salmon Fav. didn't father any of the chicks because none have 5 toes, but all the EEs wth feathered legs Im sure belong to Honeycomb because he is the one Roo with feathered legs.

Also pretty sure all the blue chicks I got came from Stormy, sky and violet, my blue cochins are mated with my blue Orpington Roo Zeus.

Pictures coming soon.

Well, instead of my lone ranger finding a buddy, he just keeps his distance and pecks the new chick when he gets close!!

Here's the first one
