Setting eggs on Thurs. Nov. 10th - Any buddies? Hatch due Dec. 1st

I just set 12 Lemon Cuckoo Orps at 11:15 pm. One egg is cracked. I used wax, elmer's glue, and a little tape at the worst spot. All have damaged air cells. USPS paid no attention to the very well marked package. The box was smashed on one corner. It also has marks and dents that indicate it was banded on 2 sides, like it was probably on the corner of a loaded pallet. It was double boxed and very well packaged. It will be interesting to see how these turn out. This is my second hatching. I really think I have a handle on it this time. I have my bator set up so that I only need to open to candle. I'll be candling all on Day 10. But, I will be candling the cracked one sooner and checking it for leakage and bad smell. Good luck to all.

So sorry your package arrived in such bad condition! I've had better luck with marking "fragile" on the shipping boxes. It seems that when "Hatching Eggs" is on the outside of the box, the eggs arrive in worse shape. I'm jealous about your having the lemon cuckoo orpington eggs! Those are gorgeous birds! I was hoping to get some of their eggs from a neighbor that raises them - but I haven't heard back from him. Good luck - hope you hatch some of those beautiful chicks!

I too set eggs. 31 lavender black/split orps eggs at 7am and then 7 silkie eggs at 7pm on 11/10. Hoping for a good hatch.

I heard back from the guy who has lemon cuckoo orpington hatching eggs - and he has them! So I drove over and got 8 - they threw in an extra two. So I added 10 lemon cuckoo orpington eggs to the bator. It will only hold 42 eggs - and I've got 41 in there!

When are the rest of you planning on candling your eggs? None of mine are white eggs - so I figure it won't be easy to see - even with a strong candler.

I'm a little late on the thread. I set 40 eggs at noon on the 10th like y'all. You do know it was a full moon and we will have large hatches! I set 31 shipped BA eggs, 4 of my own BA eggs, and 5 EE X Australorp eggs for a total of 40. Time will tell on the shipped eggs and I am shooting for 100% on my own eggs. I will be candling on the 6st day, 12th and 18th. Hatch on you addicts!

I set 6 eggs under my beautiful broody barred plymouth rock on Nov 10. I have had chickens for a year, but this is my first broody. Being a doctor, I initially 'diagnosed' her as egg bound and then maybe having some kind of pneumonia (strange clucking noises) before pulling myself together and thinking she really didn't look sick!! Then a great rush to get some fertile eggs (we live in the city and can't keep a rooster) to pop under her the next day. She is being a lovely mama, sitting away and letting anxious granny say hello a couple of times a day. Before I found this post, I read somewhere to candle at four days, so just gave myself another fright seeing almost nothing but these white spots through the shells - which after further research I now take to be normal shell.... So much to learn - and worry about; and enjoy!
