Our dual purpose bird is the SLW, the roosters are plenty big at that age. They dress out about 4 pounds. The broilers dress out at 6-7 pounds.Fresh chicken is YUMMY! If I can't sell the roosters, we process them when they start crowing. We aren't allowed roosters where we live![]()
Are the dual purpose birds big enough at 15 weeks? Or is there a certain bird you process at 15 weeks?
What did you do.....I did it!![]()
They are so fluffy and cute! What breeds?
Wilma has hatched 5 out of 7 eggs. 3 BO and 2 PR/BO. All seem active and healthy with no leg problems. One just hatched early afternoon, so I'm gonna let her keep the remaining 2 eggs just in case. I was able to transfer her by myself- a REAL victory for me. The weather is mild, so I think they will do fine. I have a cat carrier in the run for more privacy, but she seems to perfer being in a large tote turned on it's side filled with bedding. She hasn't been able to snack on grass in a while and it is probably nice to be nesting next to a salad bar. I might hook up a heat lamp tonight, what do you think?

I keep watching and still nothing. I am running a hot shower in the bathroom & I think I will take the bator in there to open. That way there won't be a rush of cooler dry air going inside. I just can't go too much longer since it's been about 24 hours. I will peel a little and see what is going on.
I am dragging my feet because everyone says to never open during lock-down.
Thanks for your input.

If you think your eggs are done then carefully put each to your ear and listen...if the chick is still alive you will hear them tapping or chirping even so lightly...but you should hear them if they are still alive...
OK...I waited as long as I could (too late for one stalled pip), it had been over 24 hrs that any progress had been made by two of our pips...day 23...so I wrapped then in a warm damp paper towel, and extended the zip in the shell on the above pictured chick...the top of the shell came off fairly easily, so I put it back in the 'bator to let it unfold and climb out on his own. When he did, he had a big wad of poo stuck to him. I pulled him out of the 'bator tonight and cleaned it off, and I'm glad I did, as I saw that it was actually plugging his vent. He looks pretty pitiful, but still hangin' in there.
The other stalled pip was already dead. He hadn't completely absorbed the yolk.
Question: How long do you leave unpipped eggs it the 'bator before throwing in the towel and performing eggtopsy? My fear is that I would find I had interrupted them...
I agree with Texasmja...this can be tough, but not quite as tough as marewatch in early Feb.!!!![]()
