Setting Eggs Sept. 24th-Oct. 4th-Last Hatch of the Year. Anyone care to join me?

Oh and it also said if the chick pips and then does nothing you need to assume it is ok and don't try to help until 24 hrs after the pip. That is what I read, don't know because I haven't been there and done that YET.

How long do you wait to butcher? I know the meat is much much better than the broilers, "tastes like chicken"

Last batch i did was about 7 months old. Time was worth it for the quality imo

If we grow out red broilers we butcher them at 12 weeks (because we free range all of our chicks and feed them twice a day) If we butcher a dual purpose breed we grow them to 15 weeks.

We butchered a few Maran roosters at around 20 weeks and they were all carcass and hardly any breast meat, decent legs and wings. It tasted really good but just not enough. I wasn't really happy with it. They are suppose to be dual purpose. The hens I got with those roo's are now 27 weeks and are still not laying so I see the breed as nonpurpose.

I know this is off the subject for just a sec, how do you get the info at the bottom of each post. Like the names of your chickens and that type of stuff.
