Setting Eggs Sept. 24th-Oct. 4th-Last Hatch of the Year. Anyone care to join me?

I am not getting my email for this thread though I am subscribed. I was wondering why there wasn't any posting going on. I am getting the calendar picture contest email just fine.

[Edit/Update] Formerly Known as ChickyBangBang (decided I didn't like the name because it sounded like I was shooting a chicken). You can't change your username so I made another account and sent BYC a message in reply to their initial welcome message. Anyway...still me.

Well, today is a good day and a bad day for my eggers. The temp and humidity is still doing great (the incubator is a cheapy but it seems to be doing just fine regardless).

The bad: Something stinks in there, and I'm not sure why? This is only Day 2 of incubation, and I thought it wasn't until they were well into the incubation period when something might die and start stinking? Why stink on the 2nd day? To be honest, I thought it might have been the puppy tooting, because he was in there with me.

...but it wasn't him, as I went in and turned them a few minutes ago and the stinky is still there.

I picked up one egg at a time and sniffed it, and honestly they all smelled the same (like an egg, nothing stinky) but when I lift the top of the bator there's definitely a slight sulphur smell. It's very slight though (nothing overwhelming).

I guess I'm just wondering at THIS stage (Day 2) how the heck I'm supposed to be able to tell which egg is the culprit? Sniffing them doesn't work (or my sniffer is broken, maybe).

Thanks in advance.

Keep a real careful eye on those eggs. Smelling is usually your best bet. Maybe have someone else try the sniff test? Let them stand away from the bator when they do it. Keep a look out for any of the eggs weeping. It will almost look like a drop or a streak of tree sap.

So far I hope to hatch:

8 Golden Cuckoo Maran
7 Black Orpingtons
#? Barnyard mix from Picanins - egg shipping experiment

Ohhhhhh I am so excited for this hatch!!!! Do you have a 2nd bator so you can set the first batch while you wait for mine? I can get you eggs for Wednesday :)

I guess I'll give it another couple of days and try the sniff test again. I looked at all of them with the LED flashlight when they arrived - no cracks. I checked for weeping - no weeping. I asked my husband to sniff them and he said he doesn't smell anything on any of the eggs and doesn't smell anything when the lid is lifted. :hmm There's definitely a slight funkiness to the air though. He said, "Maybe you're just nervous so you're imagining a smell that isn't there, all I smell is wet air." maybe he's right.

ok so my other sizzle went broody yesterday and has 3 eggs under her(thief) so guess I will let her keep them. Jeesh what is up with them girls. put me down for 3 more set 9-27. sizzle/silkie/cochin who knows reallyLOL

I will try the experiment. I am in Washington...is that far enough? I got one set of eggs yesterday and hope to get next batch today so want to put them all in incubator soon.

Ohhhhh I just saw this message - LOL!! Go ahead and set those eggs, you don't want to wait for mine and compromise those eggs. If you have a 2nd bator I'll send the eggs on Monday to be with you probably by Wednesday mmmmmmmh hope we can work it out, coz that's sooooooo cool that we're on the opposite sides of the Country.

Ohhhhhhh and my little EasterReds (Production Red/Easter Egger) have just started laying a kind of Olivey egg - soooooo cool and both of my Easter Eggers are laying like troupers so you could get some good layers out of it - :)

Brookhavens you are the BEST!!!!! I am sooooooooooo glad you live down the road (well sort of)!!!! Ordered all the stuff - cant believe how amazingly cheap those flashlights are - WOW!!!!!

It'll take about 2 weeks to get them but they work great. You need 3 AAA batteries for them. I can't remember if they came with them or not.
