I have been up nearly half the night waiting........

they can take a while...it shouldnt be long now. they may be pipped where you cant see them.

10 out of 15 have hatched. Two drowned, and three aren't doing anything at all. Hoped for better on my first hatch, but happy that nephew got to witness several hatching.

I finally have my Marans..4 out of the 7 at lockdown made it. Makes me sad, the only black didn't make it. I now have a beautiful blue, and three splash Marans. I also have a little Red Star that I decided to stick in with the Marans since I knew mama was fertile, only had mom a short time, but kept three eggs, they were all fertile, but only one made it. Cute little yellow chick with a bit of black going through..ahem..her.

I have something to deal with this time, that I've never had to before, one of my Splashes has a bent toe on both feet..the middle ones. First I tried wrapping a bandaid around them..nope, then we tried a small straw, perfect fit! But, how to keep it on..then, decided to use some electrical tape, the only tape strong enough to stay put! Now, I'm hoping I haven't done more harm than good. Hope it doesn't hurt her little skin, but it sure keeps her toes straight, and she can walk, couldn't with the bandaid around it.
So, if anyone has a better idea, let me know, and, how long should I keep the tape on? I always keep them on a non slippery surface so they can stand stable and get those toes out, but this one came out this way.
Sorry, no pics! Can't get it to work. Even with photo bucket?? Go figure..probably me.
But I promise...they are darling..going to be beautiful birds!
Good luck all!

On Day 24, out of 18 eggs, we had four chicks hatch and three made it to the brooder. I don't think we'll be ordering from that breeder anymore. Hope everyone is having better luck than we have so far.

You cant really blame the breeder for that. If they eggs came through the mail I'd put more blame of the postal system! I am happy when I even get 1 egg to hatch through the mail.

It's probably the mail but the breeder has the responsibility to send you the best eggs. I had a problem with the largest and smallest of my shipped eggs. The ones that looked like they were the right size and shape are doing great. But I, too, will be happy with one...as long as it's pullet!!!

Tallyho,

Depends on the situation. What I received were incredibly small eggs for the breed (I have three hens of that breed to compare with) and poor quality eggs to boot. The chicks that hatched have been quite small, as well. Turns out, after a bit more investigation, this breeder is known for poor hatch rates.

I'm giving it a few more days, but odds are very low.
