Setting eggs today 5-3-12...anyone with me?

I went into Lock Down tonight! I candled each one as I took it out of the egg turner and all but one looked great. One didn't look right, but I swear I saw movement, so I just put it back in. Hopefully it doesn't explode.

Good luch Queen. What humidity and temp do you go with at lock down? That is day 18, right? My humidity has varied from 52 to 62% over the last 14 days. What is ideal?

Today is day 13 and. Candled again and 9/10 are doing great! I was wondering what to do once they hatch? (If they do) how long before I can touch them? When to give food and water? When can I move them from incubatir to box?

Well here is egg number 6, it is a white egg. I just use an LED flashlight, nothing fancy. You can see the dark spot where the chick is and the air sack. All 17 showed a lot of movement and good growth as far as I can see for day 14. :)

That is so beautiful, Wyo!! I have been waiting to see if you were able to get a shot of day 14. Now I am about to start mine.

ChickenGirl, I read that you should wait until they are dry and then move them into a 100 temp box with water and chick food. Do some reading here on Backyard Chickens. I've learned more here than anywhere.

Thank you, GGG! I have fun candling them...it is like getting to be the ultra sound gal! I can't wait to get these eggs hatched out and moved on to my neighbor so I can move on to eggs of my own. Still not sure what I will get, but I am thinking Marans, I have egg customers who want the dark dark dark eggs. :)

On a side note today I let my "teens" (the hatchery birds I received in March ) in with my hens. There was only a little fussing. They have been able to see each other through the fence for a few days. They only real pecking and fighting came when the teens got too close to the babies that my broodies hatched out. They are three weeks and two weeks old tomorrow. So still pretty little and those mommas are protective.

Well, my incubator has trouble holding humidity so I try to get it up between 65-75 % for lock down. Once they start hatching, the wet chicks add to the humidity. After filling all wells in my trays, I was only at 65 so I added a damp wash cloth. that seems to add humidity when I need it and it is dry by the time the little ones hatch and it gives them a soft place to rest.

During this hatch I have tried to keep the humidity between 40-50% during the first 10 days. then I back off just a bit and go for more like 35-45% It has gone as low as 25% though. I seem to have better luck with lower humidity hatches.

Queen, thanks for the humidity info. It sounds like I need to back off a little for the remaining time until lockdown. I'm at 52% tonight, Thur. I will lock down Sunday night.

Wyo, what humidity plan do you use? I don't want to drown these little guys. I've got 32 with movement. Oh, and have you ever had one explode? What's that like?
