Setting eggs today. I'm a hatching virgin.

lorrir- Congrats on the Chick and pipp. Pictures please.

vbdeleon- We must see pictures.

I still have absolutely nothing, no pips, peeps or anything. I was really hoping to wake up to a pip.

My day 21 starts today around 4ish, so I still have high hopes, but its getting nerve wracking by the second.

We woke up to 4 chicks and one more hatched during breakfast! Pips on most of the other eggs. It's thrilling after all that worry.

Newlyweds I feel for you! Especially with all of us yapping about pips and zips. Hang in there and keep us posted!

Gypsylion, this is my first hatch, so I'm the last to give advice really, but your initial humidity goal seems a bit high. I think mine was about 40-45. Supposedly if it's too high the right amount of moisture won't evaporate from the developing chick/egg and it can drown when it pips. Some even stay as low as 25%! I decided to stay sort of middle ground with 40-45 and, well, so far so good...

Oh, yes, but I did, as you plan, up the humidity to 65% at lockdown. The second well in my incubator didn't do the trick so I added some wet washcloths in little bowls to bring it up.

Morning all........
Set my 18 home grown eggs on March 29...mid afternoon. They are in a brand new Suro 20...never used B 4. Had a little trouble at first with adjustments. Temp preset at 99.5 so didn't touch it. Humidity 52 - 53. Auto turner. All stayed as set checked abt 10 times a day. All lg ends up in the air. This is day 22...NOTHING ! How very disappointing that was. On day 18 I took Suro off the cradle and put into egg cartons...except 4 of them they're just in there standing up. Increased the humidity to 66 - 67 % and stayed steady.
I had bought a hygrometer from Wally....but when calibrated it, it was reading 66. That's 9 pts lower. Didn't use it. Besides, this Suro isn't exactly spacious. :))
ANY suggestions on what might have gone wrong ???? I had the girls in with 5 roos at the time so felt some of the 18 eggs had to be fertile. Oh...I never could candle the eggs, shells too dark. They're from my Ameraucanas.
I've read, and re-read all my chickie books for advice trying to catch what I may have missed.
Thanks. :-((

Newlywedd : thanks for the encouragement. DH and I keep checking them with flashlights :)) I guess we're still hopeful ! I will keep them til Wed, day 24. If nothing by then I will unplug and take outside...in case of an explorsion ! LOL
VERY possible I have "developmentally delayed" eggs. I think some of their mommas are.
Good luck with yours.

We have 6 hatched, 1 working it's way out (but it seems very tired and weak), 1 pip, and 8 more with no activity yet. We're on day 22. After seeing how dry the membranes were on the hatched chicks I can't help but worry about the others.

My thought is, if your bator is a still air, make sure you turn them at least three times a day. I have used the still air bators. They need more turning, and I didn't care much for the egg turner, made it too close to the heating elements..my thoughts..
