Setting my eggs tonight (April 10) Any tips?

Thank you for the welcome. I will have to ask my broody question in a different thread I guess. Some of you have such cool sounding eggs. lol. i can't wait to see them all hatched!! I am also in the middle of foaling season and watching my second mare. First one had a beautiful pinto colt. I think the mare I am watching now may foal before my chicks hatch. Busy, busy, busy. Forgot to say they are miniature horses. Tiny and cute!!

Painted Meadows- When I candled our eggs from under our silkies I just picked the hens up and put them outside for a few minutes. Our black silkie has been broody for over 2 months now with no eggs, even though I would take her off her nest constantly, so it doesn't disturb her broodiness at all. It actually gives her a minute to eat and drink, since she refuses to get off the nest on her own. She just jumped back on when I put the eggs back in. If your hen pecks at you when you come near, I wouldn't know what to do. Mine were pretty easy, though.

Hi everybody! Recandled my 15 cochin eggs today. Better, clearer results today. Much easier to say yea or nay when they're wiggling. 10 of 15 wiggly little chicklets on day 8. 7 golden laced and 3 silver laced.

Then I got up the guts to crack open the other 5, and believe me for a newbie it takes guts. Thank goodness no baby chicks!

I've had my adrenaline rush for today. How is everybody else doing?

14 eggs 2 of which are under my silkie, Splash. the rest are in my bra!

PM good question about the broody and candling, I heard that peole bring the flash light to the coop with them at night and steel the eggs for a second to candle them. I don't have a bright enough flash light. I just put the eggs out there but their a week into 'bating and I candled before I put them under her................ hmmmmmm I didn't think about candling them later on........... no power in my coop for my light that I use................ thinking about that......................

Congrats on the good results so far

I candled a few while I added a little water last night. All the silkie eggs have movement. I only have one ? egg, and even though I can't see well at all in the blue eggs, it doesn't look the same as the others. So, I'll just keep checking that one for now. It's not smelly, or rotten, so time will tell.

What type of flashlight is everyone using for candling? I'm having trouble seeing into the blue and the dark brown eggs that are in my incubators.

I am using a big mag-lite through a oval hole in a box. Works pretty good with my brown cochin eggs.
