I'm sorry your temps are doing so poorly.. I'm not sure which bator you built but is it still or forced air? And where do you have your heat source? Sounds like your thermometers may just be off... Not really sure...

Here is my post about my wonky temps https://www.backyardchickens.com/forum/viewtopic.php?id=315015

It
does have a fan in there. The heat source is in the middle. You can see how I built it on my BYC page. I have made a few minor changes for this time. Making both sides exactly the same. The only thing I can figure is causing the problems is that there is a foil tent over the light. I may consider taking that out. If I slide it side to side, it changes the temps in each side of the bator. I think if I took it out it may help, but it also may get too hot in the middle. Who the heck knows!!!!

I took a look at your page.. I see one major flaw and i say this only because I did the same thing my first attempt.. The really thin styrofoam does not hold temps very well at all if there are ANY fluctuations in the room... A 1 degree drop or rise in the room can effect the inside of the bator more than you'd think... Here's the one I designed the first time around that failed miserably http://s135.photobucket.com/albums/q139/nc29beachgal/Incubator/ and here is the one I built this time around using three drawers we had in the shed http://s135.photobucket.com/albums/q139/nc29beachgal/Chickens/Incubator 2/ ... I just put the eggs in it today so we shall see how it goes.. but it does hold temps pretty steady with only about a 1 degree fluctuation which i use a fan and heater in the room to balance out... I have nothing against homemade styrofoam bators but I would urge you to spend the extra few dollars and get a thicker one or go on craigslist and see if anyone has a meat cooler they are looking to get rid of.. Anyone who gets a ham or other perishable food in the mail would have one... They are such a better quality styrofoam!

Have room for for another ? I set a dozen Barnevelder and 8 BO eggs last night. My very first hatch ended yesterday with 7 outa 7 hatching from a home made incubator.

Goddess - thanks for your input. Your bator looks promising!!

I used a bit of my hormone cream and ate something and the bator is working better now.

I did remove the foil tent as I believe it was causing the different temps on each side. It seems to be buzzing right along now, 99.7 on the right and 99.8 on the left!!

In my bator, the eggs are actually in the upper portion where the styrofoam is much thicker. It does seem to be subject to the room temp, so we have it in a room that doesn't fluctuate too much. After this hatch, I am putting it away. I may try a different container - NEXT YEAR!

BTW - I have a repti temp thermostat and it is working nicely!!

I had these momentary freak outs with the first hatch. But, in my defense, it really didn't go very well.

oldno7ranch - Oooooh. nice eggs!

Good luck everyone!

Can you get another ice chest just like that one ? slip yours inside of the other and you will double your wall thickness and really help with insulation.
