Ummm.. Yeah, not even gonna touch that one.. LOL Glad to hear it is doing better now.. I just realized that the temp is higher now with the eggs in when I lift the turner.. I guess it's because heat rises.. So, I had to lower the temp a bit.. It was 100.0 before I lifted them for the first time.. Afterwards, it was showing at 101.2.. YIKES! So, I turned the light off for a few minutes to bring the temp down.. I am so glad I am a stay at home mom so I can obsess.. LOL

That's a really good idea.. I used cardboard on the outside.. I'm doing the same thing with this one.. To keep more heat it because I know the wood is thin... Anything that insulates will work!

Hi I am new to the site and keeping chickens - we got our first hens 1st Dec 2009 - 2 Rhode Island Reds, course they are so addictive we have added and added and now have 10 hens and one cockrel (he was a surprise as bought as a hen. My hens/cockrel free range most of the day with my neighbours hens and cockrel and are all the best of friends. I purchased the King Suro 20 incubator and set 24 eggs yesterday (my first attempt!) so I am with you. Very nerve racking. I was not as organised as you seem to be so I dont really know whos eggs are whos apart from my blue egg layer and my dark sussex who's eggs are very pale compared to the others. I have set 4 of my neighbours eggs for her too. The instructions on the incubator were not well written and didnt really tell you how to set the eggs so I have followed the photo on the box with big end up - hope that is correct. As I have never done this before will I know who fertilised the egg my cockrel or the neighbours mine is a light sussex hers is a bantum - will the chicks be a cross breed or do they take the breed of the cockrel or hen - sorry if these are silly questions! Will keep you posted on progress. Also what do you do about vaccinations - I have read many forums on this but doesnt seem to be any hard and fast rules if you want to sell the hens later do they have to be vaccinated?

It all depends on how long the temp was that high.. Also, being that you just set them, i would just wait until day 12 and candle them..

That looks really good.. Do you have a window or an alarm on it so you know if the temp is off?

Thank you, I cut the bottom out of one of the cup holders for a vent, I can see through that. I have the pc fan blowing through a coffee can over a bulb. The bottom of the can is cut so that I can aim the warm air flow to the water dish when I want to raised the humidity level for lock down. The whole thing worked like a charm, no temp spikes, the split lid made it easy to play and not lose much heat or humidity. The bulb is on for about 5 minutes then off for about 10 minutes to maintain heat levels.

.. Second, Yes, you set the eggs correctly.. There is an air pocket at the big end of an egg and if the eggs are not laying on their sides, this needs to be on top.. As for the breeding, they will be cross breeds unless you have a male and female of the same breed... As for vaccinations, I will let someone else answer for you..
