Setting up the bator and setting shipped eggs this week....anyone else wanna join?

So do you candle all 41 eggs or just spot check them? Ive only set 9, so that should be a snap (last famous words). And what kind of candler do you use? I don't have one but think ill just make one with a non-heat generating bulb (my hubby's maglite is really bright:)) Any suggestions?

I spot check the eggs and I use a bright flash light that I set the egg on and go in a completely dark bathroom with the door closed. It seems to work fine. They do sell candlers if you search the web. I wait until the hatch is over before tossing any eggs. Around day 25 or 26, if it hasn't hatched, then it probably wont.

woo hoo Cindy. It is exciting to hatch!!

Millie Fleurs are such pretty birds....how exciting!

Delisha - bummer you have so many clear eggs but maybe a couple of more will make it

Shipped eggs are so risky. Use shipped eggs every hatch so far. I'm hoping at least half of my 41 eggs hatch. Last year I had 32 out of 42 hatch which I thought was great! My best hatch so far and this one will be my 4th hatch. Sending lots of lucky hatching magic to everyone

I don't own an incubator, but my OEGB mix is going broody on me again. She keeps stealing the other hens' eggs and I want buff Orpingtons, so I'm picking up 6 eggs tomorrow for her to sit on. She hatched 4 out of 4 last time. I hope she does as well this time.

Awwwww, that is such a cute pic! She's a good mama! The natural incubator is always best but I'm using the machine kind of hen to incubate.

aww moms are so cute..mine looks evil when she sets

she has the evil stink eye

She is frightning to most people. She looks so nasty and sounds evil too, but would not hurt a fly. Not bad for a cornish leghorn cross. Both breeds are not supost to go broody. I hatched her from an egg in my incubator. Her mom and grandma too.

That's a momma's job - protect the little ones. Might as well be a mamma bear, lol!

I want a broody hen:p love seeing the pix with mamma and 'ill pip-squeaks..... Awwwww:)

I've had a hen or two go broody but I didn't let them hatch eggs because I had to order fertile shipped eggs first so I broke them of the broodiness and they were fine. Maybe one day I would like to let a hen hatch some shipped eggs just for fun!
