Having fun with 3 of the silkie babies this morning

How adorable they are.....that's a chick glamor shot!

how did you get them to sit still? It's like taking the kids for pics I'm sure...LOL!

Thanks chickenlickin8!

I'm debating on whether or not I could handle the stress and anxiety of hatching my own chicks...not to mention the cost of an incubator. I can only have 10 chickens so investing in something I would only use once would be a bit foolish, although it sure sounds tempting!
I will probably just get chicks and a brooder box with puppy pads as Gloria Jean suggests and call it good. I think I should invest more into the coop and run...you never know though!

Thanks again ladies, love all the pictures (those silkies are adorable!)

Up to five babies, today is officially my hatch day. up late last night and several times throughout the night watching some hatch! My four year old thinks it is the coolest thing ever! He is trying to convince me to keep at least one, we plan on selling them. We already have 19 hens and one rooster, not sure I want to mess with trying to raise one chick!

How are the chicks and eggs doing? Anymore pips and zips?

My babies are 3 days old now and are like jumping beans...so cute! Ideal Poultry in TX is a good hatchery if you want chicks and don't want to hatch. I've ordered from them in years past when I didn't' want to mess with hatching. Always received healthy, live chicks...no dead ones thankfully.

Melinda, I love your new avatar! Too cute! How are your eggs doing? Any pips?

 thank you! My cousin sent it To me - they're celebrating Carnevale right now and she thought I'd enjoy it.
My eggs are being very quiet. No movement. But I read Sally Sunshines thread on hatching and she indicates that the magical 21 days to hatch is a baseline; so I'm thinking that with two power outages it could be that mine will be delayed and I shouldn't worry just yet. I know I had live chicks going into lock down. I will wait and not touch. My temps are spot on and I've got great humidity. I didn't realize that the CO2 increase in the egg is what causes the chicks muscles to twitch and begins the rocking and rolling towards hatch! Very interesting. Patience will be my mantra. Fingers are crossed and will not lose hope until day 25.... Then I will candle to see if anything is still alive. I'll be like Dory... Just keep swimming, just keep swimming!

I will post as soon as I have any news!

I'll check them out. I may just have to wait until our local feed store gets some in......a friend of mine says they get in 5 or 6 different breeds. I would hatch my own (or try to) if I could talk my friend into splitting the cost of an incubator with me, but she commutes to Denver everyday so she isn't home except on weekends. Plus she already said she's not too crazy about keeping new chicks either for that reason....bummer.

So I guess I'll just have to concentrate on coop building and outfitting......don't want to put the cart before the horse!
