Setting up the bator and setting shipped eggs this week....anyone else wanna join?

Many chicks need to grasp a perch and exercise toes at an early age, it can help to prevent toes from curling. Adding a few things in there brooder for them to climb up on and perch for a while. I have a dowel that is an inch off the ground. They hop on and off at a day old. At a week old they stay on for a while. At two weeks old they graduate to a tree branch that is higher.

Thanks Vicki! I will try a perch in there. Do you think that will help correct the problem? I'm thinking it is genetic from the breeder I got the eggs from. DH and I were trying to splint the toes in place and I couldn't get it to stay on. Kept slipping off. Any other suggestions beside a perch?

Have you set your silkie eggs?

Please start your chicks on poly-v-sol without iron. I have found many times in the past that it is a vit. def. Just a few drops in their water a day for a week makes a big difference. also poly-vi-sol given to mother hens to be(egg layers) that you will be getting eggs from to hatch will help to make their babies healthier.

Yes..silkie eggs set..I got these from a different breeder..I am still going to get catdance eggs, but, i think I need to wait till later spring when her hens are a bit stronger. Fertility better too. I think the shipping distance and cold weather is too hard on them. 5 days in the mail is just to much.

Baby vitamins with out iron. They need B and A. They need sun too. So get them out for 15 minutes a day. I also think sometimes they are kept to hot. It was sunny and -2 here yesterday and my broody had her week old chicks outside soaking up that sun..

I will check the feed store tomorrow for poly-vi-sol. I have been putting Nutri-Drench liquid vitamin in the water since Day 1 and I continue it through adulthood. Is that same as poly-vi-sol?

How are your bator eggs doing?

Our temps here will be in the 70s so I'll take the babies outside for some fun in the sun. I love when they stretch out to sunbathe...so cute!

Poly-vi-sol is at the drug store. It is used for babies. Its to early to ck my newly set eggs. Two of the eggs I got in the mail were frozen.

the other eggs appeared ok. I am hoping they will be ok. .They looked fine when I got them although they were really cold. The next morning I realized that two were wet and cracked. . I hope the others did not get so cold that it killed them. Time will tell. Shipped eggs are always iffy. I put some of mine in there as a control.

Chook, you can store hatching eggs at a cool temp (60-65) til you have enough to set in the bator for those using their own hens eggs. They may pratice this but as Glria Jean said, the sooner they go in the bator, the better.

Local eggs are ok to put in the bator without a 24 hour resting period being that they didn't get tossed around a post office like shipped eggs would have. Good Luck!!!

Ok thanks! They should be fine when I get them then. My house is ALWAYS cool....even with the heat on. We roast in the summer and freeze in the winter!

I will be picking up the eggs either this Friday or on Monday the 25th! Expecting the bator to arrive tomorrow!! EEEEEEEEEEEE!!

Frozen eggs...not good. Hope the rest of them are ok. Time will tell. Good luck and keep us posted.

How exciting. Soon as you get the bator, fire it up and regulate the temp and humidity so it's running at least 24 hours before the eggs go in. Can't wait to hear how it goes

Gloria - I tried to find the poly-visol without iron, no luck. Where do you find it? I could only find it with iron. I ended up at TSC and purchased a supplement (rooster booster multivitamin For poultry of any age) so I give it the chicks and flock.

I found mine at Wal-Mart Yep they carry almost everything there. I still have not candled any eggs. I will do that on sun. or mon. to tell the truth I am just a bit hesitant this time with shipped eggs. shudder esp after the top two were frozen during shipment. I should have let yard full of rocks know he is a really great guy . They were wrapped to perfection and it was not his fault. It was NOT ANYONES really except the weather at the time. Who knows We may get lucky and some of them be winners after all. Say a little prayer. .
