Setting up the bator and setting shipped eggs this week....anyone else wanna join?

well after much contemplation I decided to crack open the last 3 eggs. They were all quitters. All were feathered out one still had yolk sac. so I have 9 little silkies that are adorable out of 24. pretty happy for my first hatch...during winter...with eggs shipped across the US. Definitely have the itch now! I want to hatch BCM and some olive eggers haha pretty sure my hubby would kill me

. With my first chicks I over ordered through the mail thinking some would die on the way and even though they were sexed...I would end up with a rooster or two...Nope. The second order I had to get a min of 15 (dead of winter) thought I was lucky with the first order and figured the same for these....nope. Now I have begun to hatch and have a serious chicken math issue on my hand hehe! I CAAAAAN't HELP IT

. Still have 5 freebie Ameraucaunas that are staggered by 5 days in the incubator (pretty green eggs). We will see how they handled 2 lockdowns?! Wow I sure got adventurous for my first hatch haha!
lol..
congratulation..you had a very successful hatch for silkies..in dead of winter. You beat the odds. Keep us updated on there progress..and your new adventure in the bator.

Hello Gatsby girl!!
Hatching is so much fun! Looking forward to seeing your chicks after hatch..keep us posted.

Your Silkies are so cute!!..I have more in the bator now.. I cheated Gloria.... and candled early. I have 10 good veining. Because it is early I am not going to worry about the others yet. They are porous eggs and many times they do not do well anyway. I will candle and weigh at day 10 and day 18.

How exciting...10 good veiners. Gloria will definitely be jealous that you beat to the candling...LOL! I've never hatched silikies before but all of you are inspiring me! Looking forward to your next update.

Hi All!!

I'm brand new at this, we just bought a hobby farm....and I asked *and received* from my husband, for Christmas my 'bator and egg turner!! I'm so excited to get it up and going!! Reading through all of these posts is scaring the bejeeezus out of me!! I'm questioning even where to begin now!!!!!

Sunshine - welcome to BYC and the wonderful world of hatching! First things first, is the bator set up and temp/humidity regualted? Do you have the eggs yet? We are here to help if you have questions

So many things to factor in to achieve a good hatch. Good luck and keep us posted!
I will be joining ya'll on Tuesday hopefully. I am so excited I cannot stand it! I haven't hatched out eggs in 20 years. My father brought over my old incubator and all of my chicken stuff from when I was younger. I am getting a dozen BLRW eggs on Tuesday and will also be setting some of my Red sex link mixed eggs in for fun.

I don't think I will make it till Tuesday!
Christina - welcome as well! Hatching your own eggs is so exciting! It will be like riding a bike...lol! Are the BLRW eggs being shipped? Good luck and can't wait to hear how your hatch goes.

9 little cute babies is great! More pics...please! Hopefully you will have 5 Ameraucanas to go with the slikies. I have 8 Ameraucana babies growing fast. I love the chipmunk cheeks and the beautiful blue or green eggs they lay! Let us know how many hatch..

Hello! I'm pretty new as well, gearing up to hatch some eggs very soon! Just got my bator on Wednesday and my hygrometer today....just waiting on mother nature to cooperate and we'll be good to go! One thing I can suggest, read everything you can and ask questions. Don't be afraid to ask for help either. The people here on BYC are the nicest, most knowledgeable around!

What kind of incubator do you have? How many chickens can you have where you are? I'm limited to only 10

But, my neighbors love me and we'll see about maybe squeezing a few more in....

You beat me to candling!!!!!!! HOW DARE YOU!

I candled this am. Not such a good report.

Just as I suspected the eggs had been exposed to extreme cold during shipment . some of the eggs were frozen when I received them. Only 7 of the 18 have developing something in them one had a blood ring sad me. But with shipped eggs in the winter you run that risk no matter where you get them from and no matter how well they are packaged. The 3 control eggs from my own hens are developing normally 2 ee's and an olive egger. That will be the last I set of them My little snot of a wheaten Am roo attacked me yesterday and the 1st time I have a nice day he is going to another home or to freezer camp I will not tolerate that at all here.

Daughter and I just candled and looking good day 15 on bantam cochin eggs and all is dark, days 8 and 9 on barred rock eggs and at least 6 with strong veining and movement and 4 unsures that am not comfortable taking out just yet. 3 days till lockdown on cochin eggs can't wait!!

Sorry to hear that Gloria! Hope the 7 make it to hatch! As for your wheaten roo...bad boy! He definitely needs to be re-homed.
