Thanks everyone for your input! He is back with the girls and doing well. I placed him back after about 3 days in warm isolation (barn with heat lamp) after his blackened spurs looked like they had mostly turned back orange.
I figure there's not much I can do about the comb at this point. It's been about 2 weeks now and it's still black and on his head. I won't touch it and will wait for it to fall off on its own.
And for the coop question, they have a large coop with regularly placed fresh chips, ventilated with a peaked/shingled roof. I've got no worries as far as the coop is concerned.
