Severe Lice Infestation To cull or Not

They make a spray (by Frontline) for chickens and lice and I must say, IT WORKS WONDERS!!!! My vet gave it to me to use on my sick Bantam. All you have to do is spray under each wing and around anus.............and BOOM in a matter of minutes, the lice are all gone. I sprayed the one time, and haven't had any issues since. Now, I use Seven Dust for my hens (just sprinkle in their dusting holes) since you can't eat the eggs for a few weeks when using the spray.

I can go out into my barn and give you the exact name of the medication if you want. My vet had the generic version, which was a lot cheaper than the name brand.

Best of luck.

Hi Mrszlopez,
I think the Adams Flea and Tick spray I mentioned is for dogs and cats.
I have a fireplace, so have easy access to the wood ashes, but yes, you could just burn so wood and use those. (but make sure they'll cool first).lol!

i will be sure to cool the ashes before hand !! i have some dog/cat flea-tick spray & shampoo around the house so i will give that a try. thank you again.

seven dust (carbaryl) should not be used on egg-laying hens, or on birds you are planning to eat soon. Since it is a suspected endocrine (hormone) disruptor, you may want to avoid using it on your young replacement pullets. And avoid contact with it yourself, of course! Carbaryl dust used in veterinary medicine and in household products were withdrawn years ago due to concerns regarding human exposure, and carbaryl products are not intended for use on food plants.

Ivermectin is safer in terms of human exposure, but does have withdrawal times when used on livestock (these are not established for chickens as it is an off-label use of these products, and withdrawal times for one species or formulation are not necessarily the same for others).

I use a product called Knockout ES in the coops, sprayed on the walls and perches. It contains a pyrethrin to kill adult pests, and a long-lasting insect growth regulator to prevent development of eggs and larvae.

Any dog or cat flea and tick product will kill the adults, but you will still have to deal with the nits if you have lice (ick)

Good luck!

Im gonna try the shampoo and spray first to see how much of them i can get off and see how many feathers i can remove without causing too much discomfort to him.
Im still amazed that the is the ONLY chicken out there with them..

He's not. He's the only one that is showing signs of them, but if he is as infested as you say then all the birds are infested. Trust me. Treat the lot of them and thoroughly treat the coop otherwise you are just wasting your time.

Good luck.

Sevin dust kills lice immediately. I've used it in my vegetable garden, dogs and chickens for many many years. Use it with common sense in mind as with any other product, just like ivermectin which technically is not intended for use in poultry. I've used it as well on my chickens. My chickens are alive and healthy... I'm still alive, healthy and typing.
