Severely injured boy and siblings flocking together

Another thing I agree with Rose on. That looks like a rip, not a peck injury. Could he maybe have caught his neck on something and it ripped away or predator is another option. Maybe that's why mama hen was hiding.
Maybe he did stick his neck though the chicken wire and pulled back. We looked at that but thought they couldn’t get the heads through. Here I am blaming my rooster and now the females.
Okay do you think it’s safe to return tho other two babies back to the hens?
I am going back to tractors and buying softer fencing 😢

I'm not sure about putting the other babies back with the adults. It would probably be best to keep the age group with in sight of each other if possible.

It's going to take him a while to heal, and it'll be hard to reintroduce him to the others if he doesn't have any buddies.

Chickens do tend to pick on any flock mates who aren't acting healthy though so, it might not be possible to have the injured one in with the others that are it's age. If you're going to be home tomorrow you could try putting the other young ones back with the adults. So long as you can watch them. A few pecks isn't a big deal, but if the babies are screaming and the adults aren't letting go or stopping then that is a problem and they won't be able to be in with them until they're older.

If you have no other space to put them setting up a section in the coop where the babies can be with in sight, but not reach of the adults could help to integrate them.

I don't recommend putting the injured chick back outside until the injury is fully closed.

Cleaning for now can be done with warm water. Mostly you're looking to get any dirt you can out of the wound. And I guess trimming the feathers would probably be easiest to get them away from the opening. Nail clippers (cleaned in rubbing alcohol if you have it) would probably work best for that.

Over the next few days keep an eye out for any of the skin or flesh turning black or green. Those are both bad colors to be seeing in an injury.

I don't know if I'm really helping, but this is all I've got for my limited chicken medical experience.

It's super late here now. I need to sleep, hopefully he makes it though the night for you. Usually if they do it's a really good sign.

If the spray stuff doesn't have anything for pain relief, it's probably OK. I like to clean with diluted chlorhexidine, iodine, or warm soapy water. Since we don't know how the injury occurred, you'll want to be diligent about disinfecting it well. Tractor Supply carries a spray called Veterycin. That stuff is wonderful. It can be pricey but it works well. If you can find that, I'd get that and start it right away. Again, I agree with Rose. I wouldn't put the others back with the big girls. Keep your injured little guy within sight of his hatch mates but where they can't peck at or try to "clean" his wound. Then integrating them all together will hopefully go more smooth. At least that's what I would do for tonight and then see what tomorrow holds. I'll tag some friends that are always helpful with this type of thing. They'll be far more helpful and knowledgeable than me. I'll be hoping for the best with you and your flock ❤️

Thank you so very much for your guidance. I did put the the babies back in the coop this morning and I’m monitoring them all together today. So far the hens are leaving them alone. I am going to do what you said and wash his wounds and monitor him closely.

Thank you
I did put the other babies back in coop until I can find another crate for them. I did have all babies together last night and they did very well not messing with the injured boy and slept bundled together all night. Thank you so much for your advice

His wound is really gnarly but he slept well with his siblings 🤍 He’s such a fighter. I did flush with warm water and rinsed with iodine and pasted with cream and now under the heat lamp.
His neck injury had to be the chicken fencing. Lesson learned to use small holes around babies.

The wounds they can recover from amaze me. So happy he is doing well. Sounds like he's in capable and loving hands. Keep an eye out for any odors coming from the wound and take precautions to keep the flies away. You're doing great!

Also, did you see eggcessive noted that the spray you posted early on and how it is going to be wonderful to use on this wound? I'm not familiar with that spray but I am familiar with the amount of knowledge that eggcessive has and I'd trust what she says. The other product isn't something I'd use on a bird but the spray sounds wonderful. I plan on picking up a bottle the next time I come across it 😀
