Sevin is so safe that in the 1970s it was found that widespread farm use made bluebird, swallows & other birds lay thin shelled eggs. Glad you all like it, but I refrain from having pesticides with my eggs in the morning whenever possible. I keep birds & raise a garden to get away from that kind of stuff. JMHO
Sorry, but I would rather have my egg shells soft than my hens sucking blood out of wounds from extreme infestations of parasites. Once they go cannibal say goodbye to your flock.. At least your chickens will still eat organic, when they prefer to drink the bloody wounds out of a weaker chicken from behind while the weak one is eating some grain in stead of her bunk mate. We have witnessed that years ago when we were trying hard to stay natural without budging off that course.

You have to rinse off the birds after treatment. We do. Wait a week until you eat the eggs like all treatments.

We use it to kill the parasites not prevent them. Twenty years of raising chicken and using sevin and don't recall any softshell problems. We add ground oyster shell once a week although.

We have over 50 birds alone in our last outbreak. That was a reason not to experiment with organic home remedies.
I'm not gonna tell my doctor no thanks I'll use DE on my gangrene because I am organic.

We try to stay on all natural but it is impossible.
Just an opinion. Everyone is in titled to one. Please don't be offended.
Without diversity the world would be pretty boring.
Take care and god bless..

Yes, I am wrong about Sevin causing thin eggs shells, of course that was DDT. Sevin however is a neurotoxin, and while the official papers claim it is practically nontoxic to large birds (ie Geese & ducks), it is toxic to songbirds. Anyone who wants to use it (funny how it is now off label) have at it! Just don't want toxic chemicals around my birds or eggs. Haven't had parasites in 24 years of chicken keeping, but would not use Sevin if I did. Dealt with cannibalism once, but quickly nipped that in the bud. Inhalation of Sevin is a problem, just like so many warn about DE, so please tell your chickies not to breath during treatment. Skin absorption is a problem also. To each his own.

I just got finished dusting about 80 birds with Carbaryl. From what I've experienced, the majority of the powder in the feathers is gone after they all come flapping out of the coop. It's basically one big party every day when I let them out... laughing.gif I do it a bit different...I don't rinse my birds, I leave the fine layer of dust that sticks to their skin. I hope it gives slight advantage of not having to do them as often. I don't like having the dust around the birds or myself... so the less I have to dust, the better.

What is the percentage of carbaryl in Sevin dust? The poultry dust I'm using "guarantees" 5%...lol. But I notice the same company has a Sevin Spray, which I've never seen or used at a concentration of 50% for mixing off.

What was the egg withdrawal time for Sevin dust? The girls here are busy fighting over nest boxes since I kept most of them out to break all the broodies. I don't use the eggs right after they're dusted until the get out and knock the dust off. All the nest boxes will be changed again today so they're won't be residuals from their craziness.

Out of my total number treated...there were only about 10 that had signs of bugs. I must've picked up the three worst the other day...lol.
Question #2...do guinea fowl ever get parasites? I have yet to see any on the them over the past two years.

Don't know scientifically but know what we do and have done since day one.
7 solid days we throw away every egg. That's 168 hours for all the math geeks out there. Hehe.

Never said we are right or wrong. It's just our program.
Our livestock is a supplemental income.
So if we use faithful traditional practices with man made cure's... No dice rolling here.

If you were born in 1900, you had a pretty good chance of dying by your 50th birthday. Now thanks to some chemicals, it's age 85 or so in America now. Only 65 in undeveloped countries. Not saying all chemicals are good.. No way Jose.. But to each their own.

Touchy subject I suppose.
We have to use what works for us and others have to use what works for them. I won't preach that they are wrong. And hopefully visa versa.

Anyway no more debating from me on this thread. Just sharing personal preferences.

Diversity is beautiful.. Take care all You Chickeirs!
HAPPY FATHER'S DAY!!!!

Here is something to turn this thread in a positive direction...
Just scanned local Craig's list looking at poultry and saw this..

Too funny! I laughed so hard when I read the description of the free chicken suit.
Family friendly humor.

HURRY before it GETS FLAGGED AND REMOVED!

I did not post it BTW but hurt my self laughing.
Felt it could change the tone of this thread..

Geographically speaking.. We live in Florida.. The insect capital of USA (seems lately). Mild past winter. Mother Nature forgot to freeze our bug problem last season. Insects and parasites are extreme right now. PRIME CONDITIONS.
We just had 11" of rain in 5 days. Mosquito season will be unbelievable now. Bugs bugs bugs!

When Sevin was "labeled" for use in poultry egg withdrawal was zero days.
Thank you...the instructions on my can do not state a withdrawal time to observe. It gives the instructions for each species, first aid and toxicology. According to it's directions...the dusting procedure is supposed to be repeated in four weeks if necessary.

REMEMBER.. THAT'S WHAT WE DO.. NOT HAVE READ.
Also we dust them in the yard far away from nesting boxes and the big hen house. Then we rinse it off before they go back into to freshly cleaned house. Don't want chemical in my house or stoned parasite's jumping off them hiding undercover until their buzz wears off. If you rinse them over a sifter screen, you can see how effective the drenching was. If the parasites are moving on the screen sifter, see how long they do move. If they keep crawling, the drench didn't take and you are back to square one. Then let them in the house or you will be cleaning the house again.
