Sevin dust?

My vet recommended sprinkling the chickens and bedding with sevin dust to cure mites. Is this safe?
it is a powerful drug.

So yes, use precautions, but it does do a good job of killing parasites.

Personally I prefer a spray with permthrin in it. I find sprays easier to deal with and actually get ON the chickens, verses a dust.

Also, I find a spray safer to deal with/easier to avoid breathing it in and getting it all over yourself. A simple dust mask while spraying works well. If your chickens all roost in a nice line you can wait until they go to sleep, then walk down the line and get a good spray on the vent area, and 1 under each wing.

I've used Sevin dust on my birds for years without any issues, until recently. I was shocked that the dust failed to kill a small lice problem on one of my birds. I switched to permethrin dust on the hen and it killed the lice. I then cleaned out the coop and nests and sprayed the coop with permethrin 10% liquid concentrate mixed in water. It has about a 30 day residual effect. It can also be sprayed on birds as Alaskan mentioned.

Recently, I had a similar experience as Dawg53. A friend brought over a young cockerel of a breed I wanted, and put him into my flock without me getting a good look at him. Only later I found he had lice eggs on him, and had never had lice before in my flock.

I recently had observed lice crawling around for a long period in a clump of feathers and debris removed from a hen with lice.

I have used sevin for years on chickens, dogs, and in the garden with good results, but I now recommend permethrin dust or the permethrin spray. The small bottles of concentrate will mix with water to make many gallons, to use on chickens, in the coop, and on roosts.
