Sevin dust?

Has this stuff lost it's potency? The plants on my deck have become infested with small caterpillars. They look somewhat like, but are not, cabbage worms. I dusted them with Sevin three days ago. I swear the caterpillars are dustbathing in the insecticide and giggling at me.

I haven't had any problem with it but Sevin has been around since I was young. Maybe some things are finally getting immune to it?

I use the spray though, not the dust.

Just as there are lots of bacteria that are resistant to certain antibiotics, there are lots of pests that are resistant to pesticides. Many insect populations are highly resistant to Carbaryl (the active ingredient in Sevin). Almost 30 years ago, I had some Carbaryl-based flea powder that, as I recall, was harder on the cat than it was on its fleas.

Went to town and got some Ortho 'flower, fruit, and vegetable' spray. The active ingredient is acetamiprid. Sprayed my plants down real well. Came back later and the caterpillars are singing 'Dancing in the Rain' and using the spray to wash off the Sevin powder. What will kill these mutant creatures?

Acetamiprid is used to control sucking-type insects, so my guess is that it is a toxin that must be ingested rather than a contact poison. It may take a while.
