Please help me identify whether my favorite chicken Ester is a he or a she. I got my first three chickens one month ago when they were 2 months old-- a barred rock, an orphington, and an amerucana. The barred rock I named Ester and she is very friedly and affectionate. They are now three months old. I've been reading over various posts on BYC and looking at pictures of barred rocks and reading about their behavior. I am now very worried that Ester may be a he and not a she. I can't keep a rooster due to respect for my neighbors. Here are some pictures of Ester. Can those of you with more knowledge and experience please let me know what you think-- is Ester a he or a she?

Thank you for your responses. I am so relieved! Two months ago when I was thinking about getting chickens and read BYC and lots of books I never anticipated how much fun chickens could be and how attached you can get to them. I start my day by sitting in their run and having a cup of tea while they peck around. What a great way to start the day! Then in the evening I put my dogs (three german shepherds and a beagle mix) up and let them free range for about an hour while I sit outside and read. I am really dreading the approach of cold weather. Thanks again for your responses. Hopefully others will concurr that Ester is indeed a she.

I have 3 Barred rocks, all pullets

and ONE of them has had me guessing for a while. Her comb and wattles are just a little more developed than her sisters, but I'm now pretty sure she's a girl. Yours looks a lot like mine. I have read that BR hens can develop quite large combs and, as a result, can be difficult to sex . . . until there is an egg or crow!

Yep congradulations is a girl! I bought 6 "pullets" and one turned out to be a roo. He started outgrowing the other 5 in no time and was quite a bit lighter in color as well. Not to mention the comb and wattle growth difference. But boy what a beaut he his. He is the best lookin out of the 40 or so that we have.
