I have 2 17 week old barnevelders and im not sure what they are, i havnt posted a photo as i have no clue how to,thay have very small combs no long long tail feathers lovely yellow legs, and nice lacing and small wattles i know thats not much to go on but any clues?

Well - sounds like they are pullets to me. By 17 weeks they should be showing the signs if they are roosters - unless Barnevelders are very different from other breeds.

I agree - they sound like pullets.

Here's a photo of one of my two barnevelder pullets at 18 weeks of age:

You can see more pictures of them at different stages here:

Oh yeah, you would know by that age. My Barnie boys have nice combs and red wattles by 12 weeks out of the Kelly Cratty line. My other bloodline hasn't matured enough yet for me to see what the boys are going to look like but give me a few more weeks.
I say you have pullets if the combs and wattles are red.

And something funny so far this year.......of all the Barnie eggs we have hatched so far only 2 are roos, everything else (about 50) were pullets. Bet it will change next year!

I too have Barnevelders and they are coming more popular.
Now more than ever people want to know the sex of their Barnies.
I have included a couple of pictures and more can be seen on my BYC Page:

I find that as chicks if they have a very, very dark head those are your roos. You will need atleast 10 to see the difference.

Hi folks!
I'd love to hear your guesses on this one: our hens did a terrible job and only managed to hatch ONE barnevelder chick from an ebay order. And then they rejected it. So this is my little hand-reared chick at 34 days old (almost 5 weeks). I would love to be a pullet so we can keep her here in the city, however, I am about 80% sure this is a rooster. S/he thinks it is hilarious to puff up and jump at my hands when I come by his box in the morning. I promise we did not hot-glue a cotton ball to its butt; no one else's barnie chicks seem to have this puff-ball tail. I don't know whats going on there. No waddle to speak of...yet?
Thanks!
