So vent sexing is apparently really hard, so I e been sitting out with my quail waiting for them to crow. But as I’ve been out there, staring for hours, I noticed the ones I know are female seem to have more fluff by their vents then the ones I know are boys. Pics below. Is this a thing or am I just hoping for an easier solution? 😆 I also noticed some vents are larger, so I’m assuming those ones are the ones already laying eggs.

🤔 interesting. I never thought about it. I would imagine that if it were a thing people would have been doing it for a while.

There are videos on how to vent sex and it’s pretty simple. If you want you can still wait for behavioural traits to impact to gender. The fluffy butt thing sounds funny but unfortunately it’s not a effective method of sexing and would be like guessing the gender regardless. The ones with the bigger bottoms are likely to be your laying girls because obviously they have to push those suckers out. (Eggs I mean ;) ) :)

Vent sexing is super easy as the birds get older. Vent sexing at 3 weeks is hard, at 10 week its obvious.
You cannot vent sex an older bird. It's also not "super easy" unless someone is a trained professional. Most here seeking advice are not.

Do not vent sex. It's not worth injuring your bird to try and get a jump on gender. Be patient and wait 6-8 weeks.
