sexing chickens

ok, tell it to me straight. how hard is it to learn to sex chickens, really. is it mostly an experience thing or a study hard thing? how come my pet chicken are they only folks in the US that sell sexed bantams?

I can answer part of your question.
Some breeds can be tricky to sex and some are simple.
I ordered barred rocks from the hatchery and got 100% accuracy on the sexing. The boys had stubby wings when they were just a week old, and fuzzy butts with no sign of tail feathers. The girls feathered out fast. Once they started to feather, the boys were much lighter in color from the girls. This is an easy breed to sex.
My RIR's feathered out the same speed as the rocks. I knew by the time they were a week old that they were all girls.
I have never tried to vent sex a chick, I'm afraid I would injur it, but there is alot of info on the web on how to vent sex day olds. There are also ways to feather sex but that does take some eye training. There is a video on youtube that gives you a quick glimpse on how to feather sex. heres a like for the video

Langshans. At least the line I'm working with.

Females feather in MUCH faster than males.

Barred Rocks are sexable at hatch, to about 85-90% accuracy.
