Sexing your Silkies (PICTURES AND TIPS - Updated July-5-12)

Pics
Thank you so much! I'll keep ya posted! They're now 4 wks old and wow, how they've grown (and changed). Do you know if the cockrels tend to have a slightly lower-sounding chirp/peep? I've noticed that 2 of my larger chicks have much lower voices (haha :)) than my others.

We hatched some silkies & DD loved the one with the most fluff - which also happened to have the narrowest comb. They were only 1 week old, so I had no clue of any genders. The goal was to keep only ONE silkie. Later we got a cute splash silkie. (It was a back-up just in case DDs silkie was a male.) That one had a wider comb & it also stood more upright. Because there was a 2 month age gap I couldn't compare side by side, but I really thought the 2nd one was male. They're 20 & 28 weeks old now, and I still see no male traits. Both look very female & are spoiled. It looks like we now have 2 silkies staying in our flock.

Of course that's when they're in the coop. Often, the kids bring them inside the house for movie time, spa treatments, pedicures with nail polish, chalk hair coloring, & up-dos.

Back to sexing: There are a few behaviors that can sometimes help. Think of all this as "clues" because there really is no easy way to know for sure until an egg or crow. Males tend to be more outgoing, run up to greet you when the brooder door opens, 1st to try out a new treat, stand more upright & confident, and take on a leadership role. (Other chicks will run behind them when frightened.) All chicks may chest bump, but a frequent one could mean male. Likewise with roosting. The males like to jump up onto the watered/feeder to have a better vantage point. (Females do it too, but males more frequently.) Physically, male chicks can have a slightly rounder face & females are more angular. Male silkies have a wider comb & then get a bump. The female's comb stays pretty flat. Males may get a slightly darker color on their wing/shoulder area as the get older. They also get long hairlike crest feathers growing angled toward the back

Here were my silkies - both between 5-6 weeks. At that age, I thought the splash was a male.

Around 10 weeks I changed my opinion & realized that Zander was a female.

Hey silkies are supposed to have black skin, feet, and beak! I they are some kind of bantam breed.

Silkies are tough to sex, but sometimes sexing chicks is easy. I had a gut feeling with these two at hatch...

Hang in there. Eventually all chickens will show their gender.

That's a tough one. Should a male be crowing by now? I can't see any "streamers" in the crest, but those wattles & comb look big.

Mine are 25 & 21 weeks old. Their combs are still small. However, mine are bearded, so no wattles at all. Also, I'm in the US & may have a slower maturing line.

I wish I could help. I guess the good news is that ultimately you'll get an answer in time.

Hi all! I've got 5 precious Silkie chicks. 2 are my favorites thus far. They're exactly 16 days old and although I've read (and read, and read, and read some more!!) on sexing these little ones and how it's next to impossible at this age, I've also read about behaviors and physical traits, and it seems there's a definite difference between these 2 that I've posted a photo of; the smaller one sits lower to the ground but has always been smaller in general. It also seems to run to the larger one for refuge from another "lower sitting", but larger chick that seems to pick on it.View attachment 1115063View attachment 1115064View attachment 1115065

Also, although I understand that both pullets & cockrels have breasts, my 2 that stand taller (like the larger one in this photo) have much smaller, if any breasts that can be felt - Is that any indication of sex? Any Silkie experts out there wanna take a guess on gender of these babies? it. I've got 3 of the lower sitting chicks w/the fatty breasts and 2 that stand tall without the fatty breasts - Just curious if that's any indication of gender?

(In the photo from the rear you can see that the little one had a case of "pasty butt" that's cleared of nicely with the help of y'all, thank you!))
It is hard to tell at that age but I had one of my hens hatch 3 and by 3 weeks I could tell the sex of all of them. I had 2 boys and 1 girl. The girl was the smallest and when I checked their combs really well I could tell the 2 boys had a wider area and a bump. The female had nothing there at that age. I know someone else mentioned this too. Check their combs really well and see if you can tell that way. Sometimes the boys will start to develop theirs by 3 wks.
Roo or pullet?!
I say it's looking like a roo.

The pictures do look "hen-ish" but I have to say roo. I've never seen a comb that big on a hen, ever. Also on the tail there are lots of steamer feathers.

Here's a more resent up close picture... there's no comb at all?! My other silkie who turned out to be a roo had a comb at this point... still think roo?

Really thinking this one is a roo with that comb. He is half the size than his brother and hasn't crowed yet. 6 months old. His brother did at 4 months and I have no roosters atm.
