hi all,
I bought some fertile eggs from a lady who thought her roo may have been a sexlink (she wasn't 100% sure). The roo was in with barred rock hens. What would the chicks look like (trying to pick gender)? They are now three weeks and I have gone from 1 roo, 1 pullet and an Idk, to maybe 3roos. If he was pure barred rock I think I have Roos.

If the cock bird was indeed sex-linked, then it's my understanding that the off-spring will not be sex-linked. Maybe give it another 3 weeks and then post pics on this forum -
What Breed Or Gender is This?

Oh, and welcome to BYC - thanks for joining us.

not sure what the father was, but assuming it was not a stripped chicken... the mother will only pass the barring on to her male offspring. any day old that has a yellow/white spot on it's head should be a boy.

as long as the father wasn't stripped. :D

ETA: Striped not stripped lol

If dad is a sexlink, and he were bred to a nonbarred bird, you would get 50% barred and 50% unbarred chicks, both genders, as dad has only 1 barring gene to pass along.

If he is bred to a Barred Rock barred hen, who likewise carries 1 barring gene, then you will get 25% double barred males, 25% single barred males, 25% single barred females, and 25% nonbarred females.

So any pure black chick will be female, but you have a 1 in 4 chance of getting that.

A smaller head dot, slightly darker bird will be half and half, male or female.

Any bird with a large head dot and wider, heavier barring will be male....but often hard to distinguish from the single barred male unless side by side.

So unless you lucked out with a pure black female, you've got barring both genders to sort out....some single both genders, but only males double barred.
