SF attacked AGAIN she is gone.....Graphic Pics!

Fun things for cooped & bored chickens! (it is mostly about ways to replace the forage behavior they so love to do when ranging and hunting for food/bugs)

- hang some pumpkins with the side broken- they like the seeds and strings, once they know there is good stuff inside- they will peck into them- a big pumpkin will last all day or longer if you only have a few birds
- cabbage head, stick other things into it that chickens like, cat kibbles, ect
-cucumbers, tomatoes or other veggies with seeds and squishy insides (they won't usually eat hard veggies
- peanut butter/bird seed pine cones (those things kids like to make for wild birds)
-hanging bunches of chard, mustard greens ect
-cordon off an area and grow some wheat, or just plain lawn grass
-go raid a neighbor's unmowed lawn and bring them over some big clumps off grass with dirt and grubs underneath
- grass clippings and scratch pile
-mealworms hiding in a pan of dirt

Thanks for the suggestions. Some of them I knew about and have done off and on but there were a couple that sound fun for them.

I'm so sorry! I thought she'd make it-- but the 2nd attack was just too much for the poor baby's system....

As I said before-- we were having the same issue at the same time-- and Ruby is now back with the flock, no problem,: but had to bring in my Aracauna "Valkrie" who they had attacked a 2nd time---this time she was in shock and almost all her tail gone and a flap of skin hanging near her vent. She's indoors and doing well--

What is odd, is that they only attacked my 3 Aracaunas, 2 Cherry eggers, and 2Wyandottes...all the rest (8) weren't touched!!
Must be due to temperment?? These will all stand in a corner, heads together facing the wall when frightened--exposing their bums to attack-- while the others run or fly away....

We switched feed due to this problem... we found that the mash we were giving the whole flock seemed to be going faster than normal... yet when fed crumbles, it lasted longer.
The vet said he thought they weren't getting enough protein for their age, and that most likely the mash was not as high quality as what we usually used (we had switched to a closer Co-op...but never again!)

We now mix crumbles with the mash-- and they have totally stopped attacking each other---
but I am definitely using my "Pedi-Paws" on their beaks!

Thanks for the idea!!
