We're sitting here waiting for Twitch's foal to "hatch!"

Well 9 times out of 10 the milk will get whiter, thicker and stickier. The winking is from the pressure of the foal, I am sure it is the same as in pregnant women, they feel like they have to go all the time. I have had mares wax and drip a little for a day and then not foal for a week. It is just their bodies going through the changes to have the foals.

Probably a dumb question but I thought that before a mare foals their milk is supposed to turn yellow because of the colostrum.

ETA: Not sure why, but for some reason this shot made me smile & laugh.

Typically the milk goes from clear, to amber color, to opaque (skim milk color) to thick and white. The timeline that this happens is variable. With my last mare, one day her milk was clear, a little later that day amber, next day opaque, she foaled the following morning after dripping for 30 minutes, she never really waxed. My older mare waxed for 2 days and dripped for a few hours.
I went back and looked at the picture of her udder, what that most likely was, was a little colostrum being squeezed out from her laying down. Mares that do wax will start small and then wax increases before dripping.

That was not true waxing. She likely leaked a little from laying down or moving her back legs. True wax, starts a little, can fall off and then come back again and again. Not all mares are alike. My last mare that foaled did not wax at all. But most of the time they do and it is wet looking as it progresses.

lockedhearts i beg to differ. what twitch has IS wax. i do know the difference. i can wipe it off and come back 20 mins later when she hasnt laid down at all its back. i have had 3 different people (my vet included) confirm its wax. i have heard of many mares waxing off and on for weeks.

twitch is STILL waxing. she has been butt rubbing a lot today. she is a little different today. i feel her milk could get sweeter, but that could happen fast! her teats look shiny today also
