Shadrach's Ex Battery and Rescued chickens thread.

 Why do people eat eggs that come from factories like the one where this hen comes from? Do most humans have a blind eye when buying eggs in the supermarket and only look for a convenient price?

What this lady does is sweet care for one single hen after being mistreated for 1-2 years. But it is not solving the larger problem of millions of extremely poor chicken lives in factory farming!

My chickens don't like pumpkin at all. Maybe it's strange food to them? Pumpkin has only been readily available in the Netherlands in more recent years.
I feed 2x a day and they have to forage in-between. Once one figures out that pumpkins are good, the rest fight for them.

They think Food comes from a store. They are horrified that I raise for meat and process myself.
I have friends that will not eat non commercial eggs. They are looking at that factory eggs are inspected and somehow better.

I remember how you very wisely gave me the downside of keeping battery hens. I honestly really appreciated that but there's usually a BUT isn't there? :D

I'm struggling right now with pain and not being as agile as the rest of some of us chicken carers BUT if I can continue I feel after all the wonderful thoughts and ideas I have been having I would still want these beautiful little battery girls if I can possibly manage it.

Tina isn't the most trusting of friendliest chickens I have had but seeing her darting around in all kinds of weather enjoying her ventures in my crummy garden, gives me so much pleasure.

I dearly loved Agatha even though I feel that I failed her miserably by not knowing how too keep her alive but as you said Shadrach many die because of being overly used.
Since losing her I have learned a little more and Tina really has bennifited thanks too my friends here like @RoyalChick @BY Bob and my sweet @Ponypoor and last but not least the knowledge you've planted in my thick head 😉

Flexi wasn't a battery and she was such a huge character, her and Agatha were best friends I miss them both but im happy I had the honour of keeping them 💗
I really am upset about this, I took ages trying to find my pictures of my girls that have died and this has ruined my post .

@Nifty-Chicken Can you help please ?

I think a lot of people in industrialized nations have little or no clue where their food comes from or how it is produced. For example, I have no idea how palm oil or soya is made, beyond glib platitudes about rainforest and all that lives in it being destroyed to create the palm or soya plantations in the first place. Price matters most for those who can least afford to choose.

We sold all of our eggs to farm customers at one point this year, and then I realized I needed eggs at home. Drove straight down the road, a few miles past the grocery store, to a farm stand where the chickens roam the field and they keep a little fridge with eggs at the stand. Before our girls were laying, DH & I spent 45 minutes calling & driving around trying to find someone with eggs because I refused to get them from the store. I think people don’t know, or the convenience just makes them buy at the store.

Show them this video. That’s what I’m going to start doing when people say things about my eggs being “dirty”. Only one friend teases me about my diet choices. I tell her to keep eating her antibiotic caged meat. I’ll take my food named, happy, & outside.

Our egg sale requests have gone up recently. Grocery store eggs are comparable to the $4/dozen eggs we sell. Plus ours are pretty colors and have orange yolks. One customer buys 5 dozen biweekly. His wife & son refuse store eggs since they’ve had ours.

I wish someone would make a PSA commercial and play it all day, and show chickens in cages and something like Shad posted, with a message at the end saying something along the lines of “find a local source of happy hens & eggs”. Of course, Big Egg would probably sue for defamation even if it was true.

No rain. Quite mild for the time of year at around 15C.
Take pallets from around the allotment C said to me. I've found three or four that I can move without major drama.

I'm finding city life pretty uninspiring currently. I could see myself putting a tent up in the allotments if it wasn't for the weather.:D
Three hours there today.

This here perch thingy I knocked up in the run extension is proving to be a popular addition. It's getting plenty of day use and it's not just because the ground is muddy. Two had just jumped down when I took this picture.

I went into the local pet/farm shop this afternoon and bought a small bag of mealworms.

Exactly.
