Shadrach's Ex Battery and Rescued chickens thread.

Mine were exceptionally good and patient mothers, caring for their chicks for up to 4 months and sometimes even longer.
Wow that's a long broody.
I think Ruffles holds the record for me at a bit over three months. She was incredibly slow at introducing her chicks to the tribe and moving back ome.

They have a different standard in Australia. From what I've seen Australian araucanas are really variable, almost like EEs are in the US. I've seen pics of some that even have crests.
There are so many standards that none of them mean much anymore.

It looks like the Australian standard wants all Araucanas to have crest and muffs, and they accept them with or without tails:

(I don't know if that's an old standard or a current one, but it does say Australia, and it was easy to find online.)

Interesting. Well, that explains all the variety I've seen! The whole blue-egger complex is a total mess when it comes to names. ;)

Ribh, I wanted to ask what is the breed of your little silver birchen bantam. I love her. I am wading through your thread (talk about NEVER getting caught up), but haven't found where you talk about her.

Australian Aracaunas. @Aussie-Chookmum also has an Aracauna she may like to show.
Mhari.
Very small [barely noticable] crest, tail, small muffs & no real beard.
Chronic broody.

Beatha.
Muffs, beard, tail, really, really small crest.
Never been broody.

This girl?

She is a Japanese Bantam. I have 4 ~ bought last time I replaced some of my flock. I'm told breeding to standard can be difficult. Can be hard to get the short legs & if 2 short legs are bred together it is lethal due to a lethal gene. They are a lovely little hen & very pretty to watch scuttling across the lawn.

Or did you mean Alpia?
Sorry. Not very good @ feather patterns.
These 2 are Wyandotte bantams. The dark girl is a chronic broody & very bad tempered with it. This is their 2nd laying season. My light girl is an absolute sweetie.

Thanks, the first one. She is very cute. Japanese were one of the breeds I was thinking of getting because they are easier on the garden with those short legs. I do remember reading about the short legged gene being lethal if homozygous.

Your Bantam Wyandottes are also lovely, but after seeing your video of the chronic broody being a b**ch, I dunno about those...

I have the Birchen, a black, a black tailed white & a white. The whites are constantly broody, the blacks super friendly. Chavi is another of my hens that actively seeks human attention. I have video somewhere of Desdemona [the Birchen] chatting away to me.
