Shadrach's Ex Battery and Rescued chickens thread.

Good afternoon X Batts and Shadrach. Work continues on the new coop.
I think if you built a fire you would fall asleep there.
Thats an idea. Buy a (second hand) tent ⛺️ an extra mattress and camping gear. And you save lots of bus money.

If the tent resembles a coop, no one will see that you set up an illegal camp. :wee Lovely to spend the summer on the allotment.

You could try hand warmers ? (Although I suppose they are not environmental friendly.).
I was gifted a small device that does lightning, hand warmer and USB charger. I only used it once trekking, so I don't know what it's worth.

I am very confused by my chickens roosting time.
When I had only the ex-batts they were pretty consistent, except if the weather was awful, and usually roosted 45 mn to an hour before night. They always had the same behaviour/routine before roosting.
Now I have two roosters, the first team to go to roost, Gaston's team (the youngest and junior chickens), has completely erratic time of roosting and behaviour. The last two weeks they went inside between 4 and 4.30, which is a good two hours and a half before night, even when the weather was nice. It's almost as if they want to spend time on their own in the coop before the other team comes in. Before that, they were roosting later, around 5. And in the shortest days of winter, I had to bring them back inside almost everyday as they didn't want to go in.
I'm never sure what to expect, I don't understand why they behave so differently.

Théo seems to believe dustbathing is an opportunity for mating.

Maybe it will improve if the new coop is ready.
I like to give my chickens a spare /guest room. Helps a lot with peace at roosting time 🕰️.
Nowadays Janice likes to sleep alone in the old coop.

Only if I have a (unwanted) broody this is out of the question. I close the old tiny coop before roosting time to prevent a broody to sleep in the preferred nestboxes.

I don't pay for the bus trips. I get a pass for managing to struggle past 60 years old.:D

9C and dry until around 4.30pm.
We sat on the roost bar when the rain started, apart from Henry who went off to roost with Lima joining him shortly after.

That’s wonderful. Here the elderly only get a discount.

It’s Sunday Shadrach. How come you went to the allotment?
I like it there.:D
My city flat is wonderful and I'm very lucky to get it. But, as I've mentioned before I really am a country boy. I do the city/flat stuff in the mornings and try to get out to the allotments no matter what the weather for the afternoons. I will I hope be spending even more time there as the days get longer.

Yes. Very obvious you like to go there. 🐓🐓🐓🐓🐓
I just thought you reserved Sundays for other purposes (like family). And it was your day off from the allotment.

+ tax from two weeks ago, when I had two broodies.
