Shadrach's Ex Battery and Rescued chickens thread.

by a 'tuft' do you mean 'crest'? If so, there are crested cream legbars, which should have a crest, and plain (gold or silver) legbars, which I think don't.

That apart, the gene for crest is autosomal incomplete dominant, which I think means a pure line can throw an uncrested individual every now and then; but you should research this yourself, as I struggle with chicken genetics and my grasp of these things is insecure.

There must be a conspiracy going on with shell colors. A few weeks ago I had a Delaware laying a snow white egg every day for about 2 weeks. Today I had a RIR lay an almost snow white egg. Maybe there is Ozone in the air or something. :)
an interesting observation, but can I suggest you refrain from the C word, as it sends out all the wrong signals :smack :p

Yes, a crest. We like to say that Agathae is "one tuft chicken". She will not lay if you are looking at her.
Either way, whether or not they are pure, I love those two. Just so long as they are chickens. But I don't have any. They are either chicks or layers, and none of those count as chickens, according to chicken math.
I really want Treacle now. Or a chicken like him. They are the most beautiful chickens I've seen (besides mine of course :p)

Blue eggs have blue shells all the way through with a clear coating. Brown eggs have white shells with the brown coating added. Green eggs are blue eggs with some brown coating added.

Forget Windows and Mac, why not go the Shadrach way and use Linux?
Consider that this is a work computer. Generally speaking people do not have an option to choose their operating system at work.

I haven’t paid tax here in a while.
Chickens at work.
The honeyberry I planted survived the drought and the winter and I have put a little fence around it so it also survives the chickens.

Rain all morning. Around 15C and overcast.
Only just got in after a busy day. I bought some wood for the deep shade shelter and got some stuff in the ground, plus some nettle clearing where the next piece of fence reinforcement is going.
No lasting signs of Lima having any further problems from the lash egg she laid.
She's avoiding Henry's advances more often and seems her usual full of life self.
Lima and Carbon are showing signs that they would like to roost on the coop extension roost bar for the night. I had to wake Lima up and encourage her into the coop with the others this evening. She was sound asleep with her head tucked under her wing when I went to close the coop up.:love

Yeah. My Dad has to use Windows for his work computer.

I never knew that about egg shells. Maybe I should crack one open and see what color it is inside. I also need a chicken that lays green eggs.

I have a walk through insect curtain in my back door. The one I have now almost reaches the ground, but the previous had a gap of about 15 cm /6” at the footstep (bought the wrong height) . The shorter insect curtain was not good to keep the chickens out, but only very few flying insects came though .

And some chick tax:
One of my tiny just hatched Vorwerk chicks is very curious and got out of the nestbox.

Edit: corrected the name of the breed. It’s a Bantam Vorwerk.

I got one. Now I need to install it. Thank you so much for the suggestion! The chickens will be very happy.
