Shadrach's Ex Battery and Rescued chickens thread.

One can't help wondering if the horrible truth is we are not fit to vote and when it comes to what might infringe on what we percieve as what we are entitled to, we will choose the selfsih over the selfless every time.
"democracy is the worst form of Government except for all those other forms that have been tried from time to time.…" Winston S Churchill, 11 November 1947
You have to consider the alternatives. So far they've been worse. Autocrats are notoriously selfish. The only water sport allowed on a large lake in Morocco is the one the king likes, for example.

Working on replacing the composite walkway on my dock with repurposed 2x4s that my wife acquired by dumpster diving at a nearby construction site. Wasn't sure of what to do with the composite boards until my friend Jeff spoke up. Jeff helps with almost every project and I provide the food and beer. He knows that one of my coops needs a new floor so he suggested that we reuse the composite boards for it. It won't require all of them but at least we can repurpose some of them.

he's a looker

I bought it 7.5 years ago.
Have been reading a bit more. Vaguely remembering something about a reset.
I found some more info on the internet why it’s possibly not opening again. Seems that the older chickens guard from before 2017 work a bit different . I’ll try if I can make it work once more today (unscrewing, checking cord, reset) and keep you updated.

@Shadrach I think I made the Chicken Guard work again. The flange that prevents the wire from falling off the axle , the string is wound around, fell down in the box.
After a fairly quick repair I put it back together and now the calibration did what it was supposed to do.

Is chick behaviour a reliable guide to gender? Here's Fez at tea tonight.

Dining with 3 aunties (and next to Maria the head hen here, but they all move round a lot during mealtime so I put no store by that); mum was at one of the other bowls. I'm gonna stick my neck out and guess that this behaviour at 14 days old indicates male. There's no comb or wattle development or colour yet btw.

Here in the UK people would rather have a tax cut of a single penny that they can spend of the crap the marketing sells us; most of it we don't need, than raise tax by a penny and fund a decent health service.
I have more of a problem with the usage of health care. The chemicals sprayed on our food supply & environment, and additives/preservatives in our “foods” are causing more and more health problems that didn’t exist. The need and cost of health care would be much lower if the public was educated on the dangers of many of these, if pesticides were banned, if chemical additives were banned or at least required to post a label if used, and other hazardous ingredients were not allowed in food or household products. I can’t believe how many people in my area spray their lawn with “Tru Green”, (a weed killing pesticide), and their kids are outside playing on it the next day. Our healthcare system would not be nearly as taxed as it is if food were considered medicine and pharmaceuticals dolled out by the dozen. Big pharma and the food industry work very hard to keep Americans sick. We wouldn’t need a tax for health care if people were healthier….the costs would be so much lower.
Mention that the car, with all it's associations with personal freedom, is helping to destroy our environment and perhaps people might consider arranging their lives so they travel less and use public transport
Europe has a much better public transport system than less urban areas of the US. It takes me 12 minutes to get to work. If I had to take a bus, it would be over an hour. For a working mom, I cannot fathom paying for childcare for two hours after school when I can just zip home in the car. Much easier for a single person or childless couple in a populated area to rely on public transport. Improvements here in the UScould make a huge difference in how many people use cars.
ere in Western society. What did we vote for? More waste, more exploitation, more inequality, more personal freedom which ironically we have even less of now than I recall when I was a lot younger.
We've supported war and division, greed and destruction with our so called democratic rights.
Not naming political candidates, but I do remember a U.S. politician who ran on the guise of “End Citizens United”. The more powerful, big political family beat him out. We vote, but with lobbyists and funds from large corporations controlling our politicians, it doesn’t matter who gets elected. The individual will not be heard. Only the interests of large corporations, no matter which side you agree with.

Returning to the topic of chicken coops...

This morning about 11am I spotted an ad for a 2nd hand Green Frog aka Nestera medium size coop like 2 of my existing, posted by someone about 1.5 hrs away. With bread in progress I couldn't leave immediately, but I was there by 3pm, it was disassembled and in the back of my car (a regular Ford hatchback, seats 4) by 3.30, home, washed, disinfected, dried and reassembled by 7, and 6 chickens have chosen it for bed tonight. The ease with which it can be disassembled to create a flat pack for transport in an ordinary vehicle is another big advantage of this brand of plastic coop, imo, besides the obvious ease and speed of cleaning and disinfecting smooth flat plastic sheets.

And during the course of the day (the afternoon, essentially) I've gone from capacity on the coops to space to accommodate anyone else who goes broody this year  Chicken math is like gravity; gets us all in the end

Enjoy this day with your friend. Maybe he can make some nice pictures of you holding Henri and your other tribe members.

After reading about boiling water for tea: I have an electric water kettle that lasts for at least 10 years now. Because it has a flat bottom , it can cook one cup of water. It’s 1,7 liter, switches of automatically. Brand Tefal (imported stuff and labeled as if it is Dutch). I bought it in a housewares shop.

Also use it to boil water for (pre)cooking because we have many solar panels and its better (cheaper) to use that energy, than it is to use fossil gas.

Furthermore about A-mazon: I never buy from A.mazon because the company is too big, the owner spills his money on fossil fuels to go halfway to the moon and labourers are underpaid. My husband did buy something from Bezos once because it was so cheap compared to other sellers - but it had no warranty and it broke down within 2 years. … fourth reason. It sells cheap crap.
Maybe I should get one of those kettles.

I prefer to buy my electronics used. Not to mention the tablets amzn sells. Those things are designed to die after a couple years. I had a old one that someone didn't want. I got rid of amzn's FireOS and put LineageOS on there. Works better.
Oh, and don't buy those cheap USB sticks they sell. Those break almost instantly.
